Installing the Web Publisher

You can either download the Web Publisher from the Internet, or you can receive the Web Publisher on a CD.

Ÿ Installing the Web Publisher downloaded from the Internet

Ÿ Installation Notes for Specific Web Server Software

To Install the Web Publisher:

To install the Web Publisher on your Web server, you'll need to be logged in to the server with administrator rights.

     1. Run the SETUP EXE on your Web Publisher CD or run the Web Publisher EXE

that you downloaded from the Internet.

     2. Follow the instructions on your screen.

          a) You'll be asked to read and approve the license agreement.

          b) Enter your name, company, and serial number. If you have no serial number,

you have 30 days to try the Web Publisher.

          c) Select the "Destination Folder". This is the directory where the Web

Publisher will be installed. This directory should be the directory for

CGI applications on your Web server. By default, the install suggests

c:\inetpub\scripts. This is the default directory for CGI applications on

where IIS. If your CGI directory has a different name or if you are

using a different Web server, you will need to modify the Destination Folder.

          d) Choose the "Default File Location". This is the default directory where you

want the Web Publisher to access your askSam databases. You will need to

make sure that your server configuration allows the default IUSR account

              Read permissions in this directory.

IMPORTANT! The WebAdmin utility (WebAdmin4.exe) allows you to configure the Web Publisher from your browser. This file lets you remotely define settings for the Web Publisher. The Web Publisher installation automatically sets security permissions for the WebAdmin utility on Windows NT and Windows 2000 servers running NTFS. The default installation will only allow administrators to run the WebAdmin utility. If you install on a server which is not running NTFS, you will need to manually set up security to prevent anonymous users from accessing the WebAdmin utility. See the FAQ file on our Web site for details - http://askSam.com/faq.asp.

Installation Notes for Specific Web Server Software

(See our Web site for the most current notes on askSam and specific Web servers)

          Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS)

Installing on Microsoft's Internet Information Server ( IIS)

1. When you install IIS, you can select a directory for Script files. This directory functions as the cgi-bin directory. The default setting in IIS for this directory is \InetPub\scripts.

When the askSam Web Publisher installation asks for the CGI directory, enter the appropriate drive letter and the path where you've installed the IIS scripts. For example: c:\InetPub\scripts

2. To access the Web Publisher use a URL similar to:

http://www.servername.com/scripts/as_web4.exe?Command=First&File=wpubdoc.ask

After installing the Web Publisher on IIS...

1. Set Read and Execute permissions for the IUSR_servername in the Scripts directory. Use the NT File Manager or NT Explorer to set permissions (depending upon which version of Windows NT you are using).

2. Make sure that the directory or directories containing your askSam files have at least read permission for the IUSR_servername. If you are using HTML forms to save information into an askSam file, the IUSR_servername will require read and write permissions.

Setting up a Secure Website on IIS

1. Create a new directory under the InetPub directory. You can name this directory \InetPub\sec-cgi

2. Using the Microsoft Internet Service Manager. Define a new alias under the WWW service for the sec-cgi directory. Make sure that you give the directory both read and execute rights.

3. Copy the askSam Web Publisher from the scripts directory to the sec-cgi directory. You only need to copy  following files:

      AS_WEB4.EXE

     AS_ENG4.DLL

     ACCUISSR5.DLL

     WEBADMIN4.EXE

4. Using the NT File Manager (or NT Explorer), apply the users that have access to the secure directories to the sec-cgi directory. Make sure the users who are permitted in this directory have Read and Execute permissions.

IMPORTANT! Do not give the IUSER access to this directory.

5. Create a secure directory for HTML files.

     For example: \Inetpub\wwwroot\secure

Apply the users that will have access to the secure directory. DO NOT give the IUSER access to this directory.  Place all the HTML code that can only be accessed by the secure group in this directory. The users permitted to access this directory will need Read permissions.

6. Create a secure directory for your askSam database files.

     For example: \InetPub\secureask

In this directory, place the askSam databases that only the secure group will access. Apply the users that will have access to the secure information. The users will require read access to the files.

7. To access the Secure Files use a URL similar to:

http://www.servername.com/sec-cgi/as_web4.exe?Command=First&File=wpubdoc.ask

Before a user is able to access any information, he or she is required to enter a user name and password. Only if you've given them permissions to sec-cgi directory will they be able to access the information.

"askSam is an essential part of my software tool chest. I can research and collect data from anywhere and any source. Once it is in askSam I can edit, rearrange, organize, and search the information easily. Then I can present it and make it totally useful for other people via the web or CD. Fantastic!"
