We've received many requests to include a list corrections and enhancements made

to askSam since version 6. Below is a list of corrections made, by build number, since askSam 6.

These are not considered "New Features" but many fixes have greatly enhanced the usability of

askSam, added functionality and most importantly made askSam more stable, reliable, and easier to use.

We addressed more than 350 issues upon release of askSam 7. We have since released 4 maintenance releases with more than 60 fixes and additions.

Build 138

UI

- fixed issue with Report or Entry Form names being lost when editing.  This only occurred if the document properties pane was closed while editing.

- fixed issue with File Encryption under the Security setting in the File Properties dialog switching to "None" after packing a file even though the file was still encrypted

- changed the "Check For Updates" dialog to provide more information about new versions.  Link to fixes and a link to full setup.

- fixed issue with Reports where the setting for totaling a field would not be saved.

- addressed issue where items in the Favorites on the Start Page would be inaccessible (in red) when the file actually is accessible.

- fixed issue when editing a Report, Entry Form, or Mail Merge, the corresponding menu item would change to Document when switching between files

Engine

- changed how memory is allocated & used when saving and retrieving saved images & attachments

- fixed issue where converted files with a style based on another style would crash askSam when trying to open the converted file

- fixed issue where newly added documents to the file would not properly display in the folders

- not all external RTF readers can display JPEG images; therefore, RTF export has been changed so that JPEG images are exported as DIB images (Device Independent Bitmaps)

Importing

- fixed issue where askSam would sometimes crash when the user closes the Import Email Status dialog after the import completed

- fixed issue where older PDF files would not import, but they would in askSam 6

- fixed issue where importing email would randomly crash on different messages when saving attachments option was selected (this fix does not apply to Outlook import)

- changed how attachments are dealt with by askSam when importing Outlook email

- fixed issue where users running Vista would get error message that email.inf could not be read

- Added informative tool tip to describe details of Email profiles without having to edit the profile to see the details

- fixed issue where askSam would crash when trying to import some Execl or Access files.

Build 137 (RELEASE VERSION!)

- fixed buffer overrun that could cause files with large number of fonts and/or styles to crash. This issue may have also been effecting reports.
- fixed Import Email dialog crash on exit

Build 136 (RELEASE CANDIDATE 2)

Remembered
- fixed issue where searching a Remembered list for documents with or without Attachments no longer gives Syntax error message
- if a user tries to Remember a Deleted document, they are now prompted to Undelete the document first
- the document icons in the Folders are now updated as documents are Remembered
- fixed issue where users could not select "Actions->Search for Selected Text->in Other file" while in a remembered list
- fixed issue where going to a specific document via the status bar in a Remembered list went to wrong document

Reports
- addressed issue where some Reports or Entry Forms lost their names
- fixed Report and Entry Form Managers so that "nameless" items can now be edited or deleted

Other
- fixed document counter in Status bar so that newly added documents show correct number instead of "Doc 8 of 9" etc
- fixed issue where tmp Report files could end up on the desktop instead of the Windows Temp directory
- the Entry Form Wizard now requires the user to provide a name for the new Form before completing the Wizard
- fixed memory leak when saving images. This issue would also cause importing one askSam file into another to take longer than it did in Version 6
- fixed issue where searching for a phrase where the first character was '(' or the last character was ')' did not find the phrase
 

Build 135 (RELEASE CANDIDATE 1)

- fixed issue where a crash could occur when opening a file from File->Open when another file is already open with folders visible. This was due to folder data being read from the wrong file.
- addressed issue where a crash would occur when clearing items from the Boolean Search dialog

Build 134

- fixed issue where a crash could occur when opening a file from File->Open when another file is already open with folders visible. This was due to folder data being read from the wrong file.

Build 133
- addresses unique set of circumstances where askSam would crash when loading a document. It could happen either while loading the output generated by a report or just loading a document from the file
- addressed Importing CSV or Fixed Field whene longer fields contained data from previous fields

FOLDERS
- greatly reduced amount of time it takes to Generate and Load folders (Using a large test file over 55,000 documents previous versions of the beta took up to 12 minutes to load folder. The same file now takes approx. 30 seconds to load. In our tests folder loading is now faster than v6.)
- reduced amount memory used with folders
- added "Sorting Folder Data..." progress string to the folders tab when generating the folders when appropriate
- fixed issue in folders where some folders would not appear in the proper sorted order. This was due to the folder field not ignoring case during the sort.
- fixed issue with folders where deleting the contents of the folder field or removing the folder field from a document would leave the item's position in the folders unchanged

INDEX & FILE HEADER
- addressed issue with Index where access to the index would not always be permitted. This caused the search errors "No matches found" or "Unknown error". This could also account for not all documents being indexed when re-indexing a file.
- addressed similar issue with the File header not always allowing access.
- the index word list button now looks like a button in all dialogs it appears within. Previously, it just looked like a graphic

IMPORT
- fixed memory leak issue when importing an askSam file into another askSam file.

SEARCHING
- fixed another issue with diacritic characters when searching or search and replace text within a document
- fixed issue in Boolean Search dialog when selecting a word from the Word List dialog did not place the word into the Boolean dialog
- fixed issue in Boolean Search dialog where the Max Hits was not updated if there was only one search term.
- fixed issue with Sort Dialog where askSam would crash when deleting items in the dialog

MISC
- several of the dialog boxes within askSam are re sizable in version 7. The size and screen position of these dialogs are now retained.
- when duplicating a Document, Entry Form, Report, etc, the document name is now cleared out in the document properties tab. Previously the document name was removed but it remained in the properties tab.
 

Build 131 & 132
- Corrected issue with askSam searching that was causing slow search results as well as program lock-ups and crashing.

Build 130
- Fixed a problem introduced into build 129 that caused computers running XP to crash after closing a file.
- Fixed a search problem introduced into build 129 that caused askSam to lock up
- Fixed Folder Preview not displaying on some computers running XP

Build 129
We are very excited about the changes made to search speed in askSam 7 Beta 8. We
located an issue (special thanks to Flo for help in finding this issue) that drastically improves the search speed in askSam searches and reports. Major changes were made to speed up Searches and Reports in this build. Also changes were made to the Pack, Import Status, & Email Import Status dialogs to prevent potential crashes.

Searching & Search Results
- fixed issue where searching was taking considerable longer in version 7 than previous versions
- in order to accomplish the speed increase, the results of a search are no longer stored directly into the results grid. A virtual method is now used (data stored elsewhere); as a consequence, the Grouping option in the search results is no longer available as it is not supported in virtual mode
- fixed issue where the Search Results button on the Search bar flickered during a search
- fixed issue where the Remembered Icon appeared in several different columns instead of just the second column
- sorting or moving of columns is no longer allowed during the search. Once the search has completed, column sorting & moving is permitted

Engine
- fixed issue where a Global Replace was removing bookmarks
- fixed a couple of memory leaks associated with Pack
- fixed issue where some report outputs was missing several lines of text

Import
- fixed issue where attachments would be corrupted during importing
- import will now look for attachments within the mailbox directory structure if the attachment cannot be found in its specified location
- fixed issue where users could not browse for other Thunderbird email directories
- reworked code for Status dialogs for Import & Email import to avoid potential UI crashes

UI
- reworked startup code to try to minimize the noticeable delay on some computer between the splash screen and the loading of the Start Page
- changed the appearance of the attachment button on the status bar so it no longer looks disabled, and it change to green if a document has an attachment
- fixed issue where Ctrl+G was assigned to both View->Folders and the internal Goto Folders. View->Folders no longer has a keystroke assigned to it. View->Folders is only a toggle, to set the focus to the Folders, press Ctrl+G
- when pressing Ctrl+G (Goto Folders), the folders will be displayed if they were not visible. Previously Ctrl+G would only go to the folders if the were visible
- fixed issue when navigating documents and the Attachments Pane did not properly refresh with the current document's attachments if the pane was not visible
- fixed issue where the Tools Pane state was not being saved
- the Document Properties Pane no longer reappears when loading a file if the pane were previously closed
- when entering a name/title for a document, a test is made to ensure that the name/title is unique
- fixed issue where when adding a document to a folder, extra text appeared after the folder name or all text after the folder name was deleted
- fixed issue when Searching or Search/Replace within a document, diacritic or other non English character caused partial words containing these characters to be selected when "Whole Word" option was used
- fixed issue where scrolling the folders on large files was very slow
- the thread used when loading/generating the folders is now set to a low priority to try to "ease the load" a bit
- fixed issue where some non printable control characters were appearing in the folder view
- fixed issue where the Document Properties were not being refreshed when navigating documents with the folders
- fixed issue where the Start Page menu would sometimes appear for documents after making customization changes
- fixed issue where some reports were taking up to 20% longer to run than they did in version 6
- fixed issue where the picklist separator was ignored when generating a list from field contents in a Report Prompt
- fixed issue where an asterisk was being added to all requests made using the Word search in the Advance Search dialog

Customization
- fixed issue where an error occurred after trying to add buttons to some of the toolbars

Resources
- removed redundant Add to Folder button from Document toolbar
- removed Ctrl+G for View->Folders
- removed the column formatting options from Search Results Properties dialog as the feature did not work

Pack
- reworked the code to try and eliminate a potential UI crash

Webpage Saving
- fixed issue where graphics and other non-text items were not properly saved

Build 128

- fixed issue, new to build 127, where the document did not show scroll bars and hits were not highlighted when searching
- fixed issue with Start Page where text would sometimes disappear after pressing the Alt key
- fixed issue where a newly inserted or replaced image in a document would disappear after saving the document. Then if any further changes were made to the document and it was saved again, any data after the image was lost.
- fixed memory leaks when deleting images from a document
- fixed issue where blank text was appearing for some documents in the folders
- enabled the Advanced Search option under Refine Search popup in the Search Results
- when refining a search, the refined search is now be enclosed in parenthesis. This is to ensure the request is made properly.
 

Build 127

Search & Reports
- Advanced Search dialog now allows setting of a custom search result
- Pressing enter on the Search Line (command line) no longer beeps
- Corrected issue where doing a boolean search while in a remembered list only searched for the first item in the remembered list, and in any document for the remaining search items
- Corrected issue where a report with IF statements would skip documents that did not contain fields within the IF
- Corrected issue where searching a date match in Any date field did not work
- Corrected issue where "Listing Amounts" while doing "Actions->Field->Total" did not display the total amount if the total was zero

Folders
- Non-printable characters no longer show up in folder tree
- Corrected issue where folder tree would sometimes be narrower than the folder window
- Loading folders now uses a slightly faster method
- Folders now refresh if a File->Pack is initiated while in an Entry Form, Report, or Mail Merge
- Corrected issue where doing a boolean search while in a remembered list only searched for the first item in the remembered list, and in any document for the remaining search items

Remembered List
- Search results no longer closes or does not display when searching a remembered list
- A message is now displayed to the user if adding/removing a document to/from a remembered list fails

Picklists
- Corrected issue where askSam would sometimes crash when loading the Pick List dialog
- In Prompt dialogs with Pick Lists, users can now either restrict selection to only items in the pick list or allow anything to be typed into the Prompt
- Corrected Pick Lists sorting in descending order instead of ascending

Import
- Minimized the internal opening/closing of Outlook when importing Outlook email

Properties & Options
- Added file property to allow users to decide how to name new documents that do not have a name: Use First Line (default), use field contents, or none (don't name the doc)
- Added descriptions for all File Property items
- The user can now decide where to place the "File Name" tabs (Top, Left, Bottom, or Right). This can be set in the Global Options or the right click tab menu
- Corrected document property option for Add Location showing the wrong setting
- Corrected random color being saved to document property after saving a document
- Corrected document property issue that would overwrite the document name for new documents when saving
- Added descriptions to items in the File->Index dialog
- Removed tile and cascade options from the Window->More dialog.
- Added descriptions for all Global Options

Other
- When deleting duplicates or doing a global replace, a message would appear telling the user they should pack the file. Now the message is only displayed if the file truly needs to be packed.
- Eliminated screen flicker when navigating documents in the search results
- Eliminated unnecessary random screen flicker
- The message "having a sort in the request & search results" no longer appears
- Help->Check For Updates now works. Auto checks are done every 30 days if desired
- Corrected issue with pasting Unformatted Text into a long field in Data Entry mode - no longer places the cursor outside of the field (no crashes when typing after a paste).
- Corrected issue where a new entry form was loaded into the editor if the wizard was initiated from an entry form & the user choose to save and not edit the form
- Corrected issue where askSam would not fully shut down if the user canceled while creating a new file.
- The Start Page now displays correctly on screens with DPI settings other than 96dpi
- Corrected issue where doing a Global Replace would sometimes delete the bookmark on the same line as the replaced text
- Corrected issue where askSam locked up when creating a file from a template

Build 126

IMPORTING:
- fixed issue where importing Word or RTF files with a delimiter string would stop importing. This occurred when a large portion of the file being imported was being saved as a document.
- after importing, the folders no longer refresh if nothing was imported
- fixed progress bar not working when imported delimited files (CSV or Fixed)
- fixed issue with importing delimited files where an extra blank line at the end of the files caused the Delimited Wizard to improperly display the data
- fixed issue where once askSam accessed Outlook, it would not close it until the user exited askSam

SEARCH:
- fixed issue where documents with wrapped hyphenated words were not being found. The documents are now retrieved, but at this point only the first part of the word is being highlighted
- fixed issue where the "Search Prompt" wasn't doing a phrase search even if the checkbox were selected
- fixed issue where new Search Results views were not being properly added to the list. Previously, a blank item was being inserted and the user could not do anything with it.

MAIL MERGE:
- fixed issue in Email Merge preview with hypertext links causing the text after the first hypertext link not to be displayed in the preview
- restored missing items to mailmerge toolbar

PICKLISTS:
- fixed issue when inserting a picklist (pressing F11) gave error message "This command requires exclusive file access. Unable to get exclusive access to this file.". askSam now tries to open the file exclusively before giving the error message.
- Picklist dialog now sorts the items when the checkbox is selected, clicking on the column header will also sort the items (ascending only)
- fixed issue where new text entered for a picklist item was not being saved. Also added "Add Item" button to the dialog.

MISC:
- addressed a performance issue with the engine when loading field data
- history for Report Output is now removed when the output is closed
- fixed issue where data typed into one or more of the document properties tab was not saved when the user saved the document.
- fixed issue where Windows Explorer would give the error message "Windows cannot find file "filepath". Be sure you typed..." when trying to open an askSam 7 file from Windows Explorer. The install will attempt to remove the registry item causing the error. If it cannot remove it, the error might occur once, then askSam is run, it will correctly set the registry item.
- restored the ability to customize the Commandline (search bar)
- Tools tab now shows the tools that were part of the folders in version 6
- removed "Auto Show Search line..." from the global options

New:
- added the ability to "Ignore Articles" when sorting folder data
- added Global Option that allows user to not open Start Page when askSam loads.
- added a "Tools" menu item to default menu (start page or no files open menu)

Build 125

New
- Email merge now has the ability to write user defined data to a field when a document has been processed by the merge.
- if the email field in any of the documents in a email merge are blank, the user is given the opportunity to search for those documents after the merge completes
- Email Merge no longer stops or crashes if the email field is blank
- the user has the option to view the email merge log once the merge has completed (if a log was created)
- in addition to Searching for selected text in the current file (Ctrl+Y), we've added the ability to search for selected text in the current file as a phrase (Ctrl+Shift+Y). Users can also now search for selected text as a phrase in another file.
- where appropriate in menus, the name of the "Active" Remembered list is displayed instead of just "active remembered list"
- Double clicking on a report name in the Report Manager now runs the report

Folders

- fixed issue where askSam would lockup if there was any highlighted text in the editor when closing the file

Build 124
- Addressed potential buffer overrun issue for extremely long font names
- Import & Export file types now list "askSam 7" instead of "askSam 6"
- When using stored import settings (asi files), the "Import Wizard Step 2" no longer automatically uses comma as a delimiter. In previous versions, it would not be selected, but using it internally.
- Fixed: Email Import problem that misinterprets the size of attachments; which caused buffer overruns (crashed askSam)
- Email Import Profiles dialog Listbox now shows the entire profile name instead of truncating it at the edge of the listbox
- Fixed: Import problem where stored settings asi file was not being loaded
- Search bar command line now properly responds to accelerator keys
- If a document has been modified, the dialog for saving the changes will beep like version 6 did. (something Microsoft removed from their code)
- Folder Options and Refresh can now be accessed from the main menu
- Fixed Landscape mode problem where Portrait margins were used
- The Ruler now properly shows and hides without having to resize the main program window
- Removed "Display as icon" option from the "Insert OLE" dialog since that option is not used by askSam
- Fixed OLE Objects bug where new objects could not be inserted into a document and existing objects could not be edited
- Addressed a potential problem where certain text would not display properly in the folder tree
- Key strokes for going to the next and previous search result items now work properly

Saving Web pages
- Addressed some memory leaks in ASWebSave.dll and SaveOcx.ocx
- Fixed problem where default directory would not be properly set if the associated registry entry did not exist
- A bug still exists where askSam may crash after packing after one or more web pages have been saved to the file. But this is very specific and will be corrected before release.
 

Build 123
Reports
- Exported (RTF) reports in landscape, no longer appear in portrait in other apps like Word
- Fixed ^D etc in report output. ^N & ^P are not supposed to work for report headers, only file headers & footers (because they are page dependent)

Export
- Fixed registry setting so options are read/written to version 7 and not 6

Import
- fixed Poco Email import crashing. Unexpected date format caused crash

Misc
- When doing a request that has a sort, the search results progress bar will display in a Marquee style (Win XP or higher). This type of progress shows activity without having to know the total time. The folder view also incorporates this style of progress bar. Large files still do not show the initial "Generating folder..." message (working on it). Also plan on adding it to reports to show activity.
- Search dialog now displays search items in multiple lines like version 6 did
- Search results are now closed when switching to remembered lists (as in v6) instead of toggling the results
- The user now has the option to pack their file after Delete Duplicates process completes (when "View duplicates before deleting" is not selected). The option is also given after a global replace has been done.
- Keyboard navigation in the entry form wizard now works as it did in version 6. Previously using the Tab key would crash askSam and the cursor up & down would not move to rows if the user were editing a field name. Once the proper cell is highlighted by keyboard navigation, pressing F2 or Ctrl+Enter will either enter edit mode on a field name or open the drop down for the field type.
- Found & fixed memory leaks associated with Folders, Document Properties, & Attachments views
- Fixed Ctrl+Q so it goes to command line instead of doing nothing
- Fixed User Registration data so it reads from version 7 registry instead of 6

Printing
- Addressed problem with MFC where printing a specific range of pages would start at the correct page but always print all the remaining pages of the document instead of the specified range.

Folders
- No longer possible to close the toolbar by right clicking on it
- Using the keyboard to navigate the folder tree now works as it did in version 6. Previously each time you tried to cursor up or down, focus would go to the editor instead of staying in the folder tree.
- The folder tree width is now the same as the folder view. Previously it was set to one size (usually smaller than the view).
- Added punctuation items for drop down in the Folder Options dialog

Search Results
- No longer possible to close the toolbar by right clicking on it
- Fixed bug where floating window did not properly load results (if at all)
 

Build 122
Document Properties & Entryforms
- Fixed - some of the properties were not being saved

Folders
- Fixed - folders were not using a separate file handle as it did in version 6. This could have caused crashes and/or file corruption (requires newer version message)
- Fixed - building the folders on a large file would not properly shut down the thread when closing the file or trying to pack or any other process that required exclusive access
- Restored missing context menu

Deleting documents
- Fixed - viewing deleted documents showed a blank screen instead of the documents
- Fixed - where closing the search results after trying to view deleted documents would not allow the user to navigate the documents unless the selected View->Data Documents

Graphics
- Fixed - problem that caused a document with graphics to be drawn multiple times

Packing a file
- Fixed bug where askSam would crash sometimes after packing if "Close this dialog when pack completes" was selected

Picklist Dialog
- Saving changes & new items is possible now. Save button was always grayed out before.
- The list of items is now properly updated after deleting an item. It stayed on the screen previously.
 

Build 121

- Fixed - after changing attachment view style, askSam switches back to previous style after saving the document and clicking on the pane
- Fixed - report toolbar & field list did not appear when creating a new report from the report manager dialog
- when navigating the search results, the focus now stays in results until user hits escape or clicks elsewhere (like version 6)
- When creating a new file and using the Entry Form Wizard, that new form is saved as the first entry form (only when creating a new file)
- fixed bug where "Switch back to original file" button grayed out & double clicking on report output did not go back to the file
- Fixed - Shift + F10 not displaying context menu
- Fixed - changing a document property would not register that the document had changed
- Added save button to document properties toolbar
- Added tooltips to Folder Toolbar for text of Folder Group, first line, or document name
- Appending an Entry Form to all documents in a file now works
- When packing multiple files, status section now properly displays information as to whether the file was in use or could not be found, etc.
- Fixed - first item in picklist was always selected in the prompt dialog (stored searches, reports etc)
- Fixed - new columns could not be added to the search results
- Changed all occurrences of 2007 to 2008
- Fixed - memory overwrite bug when loading some long URL links in the editor (crash)
- Fixed - Reports where footer totals appeared at beginning of line instead of their proper locations
- The email import profile dialog is now resizable. Long filenames could not easily be seen
- Fixed - import location was not being restored
- Import now correctly supports Word 2007 docx format

Build 120

- Added "Reset Layout" for Current File or All Files
- Minimized flickering of the status bar while typing in the editor
- Toolbars for Entryform, Reports, & Mailmerge no longer global, dockable around editor only
- Added shading to indicate dockable areas for Folders, Attachments, Search Results etc
- Added drop arrow to main work area that shows all open files (far right of file names tabs)
- Fixed: text after date, time, etc stamp no longer deletes all text after the stamp
- Check for updates is currently disabled
- Search results pane now defaults to below the editor instead of across the entire bottom of screen
- Fixed: floating windows (folders, attachments, etc) no longer visible when switching to other files
- Document menu now reads "Add To Folder..." instead of "To Folder..."
- Added context menu to sidebar panes (drop down arrow)
- The Advanced Search dialog is now resizable.

Report Editor
- Fixed: clicking on report hot code (button in report editor) now works
- Fixed: adding/editing a field via the Insert Field dialog no longer gives an error that a fieldname was required even though one was provided

Startpage
- New layout
- Fixed: start page (when the active page) no longer constantly accesses the hard drive
- Fixed: new Start Page no longer created when selecting "View->Start Page"
- Added Ctrl+Alt+S to go directly to the Start Page (or open it if it is not already open)
- Adding a favorite now goes directly to "Open File" dialog (one step instead of two)

File Properties dialog
- Added Default Attachment view style (Icon, List, Details, or Thumbnails)
- Property grid now resizes when the dialog is resized
- Property grid now uses appropriate theme

Attachments Pane
- Added ability to set List View style (Icon, List, Details, Thumbnails). Defaults to Icon unless changed in File Properties. Style to will be stored with document.

Folder Pane
- Tools are no longer part of the Folder pane
- Toolbar now has same appearance as other toolbars in the application

Search Results Pane/View
- Fixed: When a search returns only one document, moving to another document then clicking on the item in the Search Result now returns to the document.
- Fixed: Shift & CTRL work to select multiple items.
- When clicking on an item, focus will stay in the search results if the item clicked is the same as the current document. Previously focus always went back to the editor. (This item is still being corrected and does not currently work as it did in V6).

Global Options dialog
- Dialog is now resizable

- The IE setting for "Save Web Page to askSam 7..." is added if it doesn't exist
- Fixed bug where folders sometimes displayed corrupted text
- Replaced ImageGear library used in versions 4, 5, & 6 with CxImage library. Allows GIF and other image types
- Search line is now associated with the editor instead of the main window
- Moved document navigation buttons etc from main status bar to editor status bar

- IMAP - Fixed bug where folders with spaces in the name were not being imported
- IMAP - Fixed bug where using a log file would cause askSam to crash

- Fixed email import bug where corrupted text appears in various places within the emw file settings if askSam is in single user mode
