How Other People are Distributing Information Using askSam
Veterinarians Sharing Information

Starting in 1989, Marty Page and his company First Move, developed a database of journal citations for veterinarians.
Veterinarians are busy professionals -- moving from patient to patient, having to know many different species, their unique anatomies, diseases and treatments, and running bustling practices. They usually reply on an assortment of high quality veterinary journals to help bring new and useful medical information into play.
However, it is hard for them to keep up with the large amounts of data being published. Furthermore, most cannot remember the exact location of recently read articles, and so their archived journals are very nearly worthless. And yet most practioners religiously keep those back issues of journals -- "you never know..."
First Move came to the rescue by creating a bibliographic database that now contains over 45,000 records -- covering over 40 journals, going back 5 - 20 years. It covers standard articles about dog and cat medicine, and also lots about ferrets and lemurs and porpoises. Starting in 1991, First Move distributed this data using askSam.
The database was designated to help veterinarians quickly find the citations they need, so that they can go to their library and pull up the full text. askSam was flexible and adaptable to a number of different needs, from simple full text searches to massive import and export functions for the authors who prepare two or three biographies each month.
Using askSam, veterinarians can now quickly pin point the information they are looking for down to the most obscure details i.e., "What do you do to save a Boa who might have swallowed some plastic?" Fortunately askSam's full text search can have the information they are looking for at their finger tips in seconds.
