Ontario Ministry Of Health - Lists and describes services offered by the Ontario Ministry of Health. Of pharmacy interest: ODB (Ontario Drug Benefit Plan), Trillium Drug Program.  Includes information on coverage offered by provincial drug plans.
Drug Coverage - This site allows the user to determine what drug is covered under either provincial drug plans, federal drug plans, or private third party plans.
Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary - This is the site for the current ODB formulary.  It allows the user to search through the ODB formulary on line.  There is also a link to download a pocket-book version of the Limited Use Codes.
RAMQ - This site will allow the user to see the most up to date list of drugs which are covered by the RAMQ.
Canadian Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) Newsletter - Lists publications offered by Health Canada. ADR newsletters includes contact names and phone numbers.
Canadian Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting System - This link provides electronic copies of the ADR reporting forms and guidelines on the Canadian ADR reporting system.
Health Canada - Santé Canada - Searchable Home Page for Health Canada with helpful links to many Canadian Government Agencies.

Drug Product Database - Searchable database on all marketed pharmaceutical agents in Canada. Search by the name of the drug, the name of the drug manufacturer, or by its DIN number.
Notices of Compliance (NOC) Listing - Lists products (alphabetically by trade name) that have received approval (NOC) from Health Canada. Current up to the previous week.
Medical Devices - This site will allow the user to search for any medical device that is approved by Health Canada.  The document must be downloaded (Adobe Acrobat) and a search feature can be used to scan the data.  Note this link will bring you to the Therapeutics Products Programme general page.  Once there, cursor down to the 'Medical Devices Product Licences Issued' link and then click on the 'PDF' icon to download the database.
Natural Health Products Directorate Monographs of Natural Products - This site gives the user access to approved monographs for selected natural products.

Orphan Drug List - FDA list of products currently designated as orphans by the Office of Orphan Products Development.
The Orange Book - This is the electronic version of the book that is published each April.  This database is updated monthly.  It contains all approved drugs in the USA.  It also contains a list of therapeutically equivalent products (if there exists one for the particular product).
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Home Page - Contains links to various American Government Agencies.  Includes the FDA drug approvals lists, Dear Doctor letters, and reporting of ADRs.
National Institute for Health (NIH) Consensus Development Program
Center for Disease Control (CDC) - CDC provides a single point of access to a variety of CDC reports and guidelines including travel, disease prevention, STD and morbidity & mortality weekly reports (MMWR).

Rx & D - (Canada's Research Based Pharmaceutical Companies) Information from researchers and manufacturers of brand name prescription drugs in Canada. The site contains a list of member companies, patent information and articles of interest to the pharmaceutical industry.
Ontario College of Pharmacists - The licensing body for Ontario pharmacists. This site contains a directory of names and e-mail links to staff at the college it also contains information regarding pharmacy practice issues and continuing education events. This site also links to the pharmacy technicians’ web site.
http://www.pharma.qc.ca/ - Web site that was developed by a group that includes L'ordre des pharmaciens du Quebec, Pharmactuel, Quebec Pharmacie, etc.  Includes a searchable database of indexed articles.
Canadian Pharmacists Association (formerly Canadian Pharmaceutical Association) - Lists publications available from the Canadian pharmaceutical association, copies of Drug Briefs since 1997 and provides information on ongoing research and practice initiatives as well as a calendar of events.
National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities - Information on pharmacy and pharmacist licensure and regulation in Canada. An interesting feature of this site is that it allows you to search drug schedules for specific products.
Patented Medicine Prices Review Board - Reviews the purpose and jurisdiction of the patented medicine price review board. It also lists its membership and publications.
Canadian Association of Pharmacy Technicians - Provides general information about the association, current chapters, how to become a member and a calendar of events.
 
 

American College of Clinical Pharmacists (ACCP) - Information about ACCP and how to become a member. It also contains news releases and position papers from the college, meeting and event calendars and the table of contents of the journal Pharmacotherapy.

Public Citizen - The consumer's eyes and ears in Washington. They fight for issues such as safer drugs and medical devices. Site describes initiatives by Public Citizen and allows you to search for specific information.
Media Doctor.ca - This site summarizes any health related stories which appear in the various media venues in Canada.  It is useful for finding out what laypeople are hearing on the news.  Also useful for when we get questions that start with 'my client heard it on the radio or TV...."
Sante Ontario - This site gives consumer/patient information in French on various disease and drug topics.  The English site can be accessed at Healthy Ontario.
Health Care Information Resources - This site was developed and is maintained by the Library of McMaster's Health Sciences Centre.  It contains an extensive list of links to associations that offer information for patients on a variety of conditions.
MayoClinic.com - an interactive site that covers topics including information on various diseases and medications
Caring for kids - This web site is developed and hosted by the Canadian Paediatric Society.  It includes information on childhood diseases, immunization, care for the newborn, etc.
Merck Manual Home Edition - A source of complete and comprehensive information written in easy to understand English
Medline Plus Health Information - interactive site that offers information on medications and diseases and access to a free medical dictionary.  Hosted by the National Library of Medicine
Health Central - The commercial internet pharmacy that also provides some information, mostly for patients. Has very general product monographs, identification, herbals. Nice site for Chinese Herbals and to get a good joke from time to time.
Not-2-late - This web site offers information on emergency contraception (post-coital contraception).  Information is also available in French or Spanish.
American Academy of Family Physicians - Run by the aforementioned Academy that has info in English and Spanish. Pt info is derived on the USP DI II and has info on herbal/alternative data from AltIndex. Does drug interactions as well (this is the one with the "medicine cabinet") and gives a nice colourful printout on possible interactions. Has info on disease states as well. Can be printed in a printer-friendly format.
It's Your Health - Public information on a variety of topics including drugs, devices, environmental health and food.  Prepared by Health Canada.
Canadian Health Network - Health information you can trust on a variety of health conditions.  Sponsored by Health Canada in association with several agencies.  (French and English)
Health touch- Online for better health - Provides drug and disease information for the patient. The site allows you to search for Medi-Span® product monographs of prescription and OTC drugs.
Health Encyclopedia from PersonalMD - A patient-oriented medical reference that covers more than 700 medical and surgical topics. Clinical and Reference Systems.  Available in English and Spanish.
Pharmasave Online Health Centre - Health care information for consumers. The Pharmasave Heathnotes newsletter is available, as well as a general summary statement on the use of vitamins and health food products.                                                                                                                                                                              sexualityandU.ca provides credible and up-to-date information and education on sexual health. Alternative Medicine Review - AMR is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to providing accurate, timely and clinically relevant original articles on alternative medicine.  It includes monographs on selected agents.
American Journal of Health-System Pharmacists -
Annals of Pharmacotherapy - Access to full-text version of the journal.  It is presently FREE but will eventually have a password to allow access to subscribers of the journal only.

The Australian Prescriber - Medical journal that offers full text access to their entire collection.  Site also has its own search engine.
Canada Communicable Disease Report - Weekly publication of the Laboratory Centre for Disease Control
Canadian Journal of Clinical Pharmacology - Site allows for free electronic access to current and previous issues of the journal.
Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy - Official journal of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists.  Full-text articles from 2001 onwards.  Previous issues only contains titles with some abstracts.  Requires password to access full-text articles.

Lippincott's Hospital Pharmacy - Peer reviewed monthly journal by Facts and Comparisons.  Includes many regularly featured columns and excellent reviews on newer drugs.
The Medical Letter on Drugs and Therapeutics - Useful newsletter on new drugs.  Requires a user name and password.
Morbidity Mortality Weekly Report - Publication of the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta.
Pharmactuel - Site that allows the user access to full-text articles that appear in Pharmactuel back to 1999.
The Pharmaceutical Journal - The official publication of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.  Professional journal for UK pharmacists.  Typically contains at least one clinical article.  This site also gives access to other UK pharmacy publications.
Pharmacy Practice, Hospital Pharmacy Practice, Pharmacy Post, L'actualite pharmaceutique - Site for the Roger's Communication Pharmacy publications. Selected articles are available in full text.
The Pharmacist's Letter - Web site where subscribers can download the complete text articles that are highlighted in the newsletter.
Pharmacotherapy - The official journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.  Full text access to journals from January 1999 to present.  Password protected site.
Quebec Pharmacie - French Pharmacy journal that contains several useful clinical articles per issue.
Reactions via Winspirs - Database containing adverse drug reactions and drug interaction.  Requires a password.
Therapeutics Letter - This is a bi-monthly letter targeting identified problematic therapeutic issues (brief, simple, practical messages). The process involves a literature review and development of the message by different working groups of the Therapeutics Initiative. The letter is reviewed by specialists who are expert in the particular therapeutic area and members of the Scientific Information and Education Committee prior to dissemination.
US Pharmacist - An on-line edition of U.S pharmacist. It includes access to the front cover of the most recent journal. In addition, they offer full-text of the articles appearing in their journal. It is possible to search for topics of interest appearing in U.S pharmacist between September 1996 to the present.

Free Medical Journals - A site that links web sites of free medical journals by alphabetical listing or by area of interest.
Hardin Meta Directory - Contains an extensive list of free medical journals on the internet.  Sponsored by the University of Iowa Library.
The Ottawa Hospital Library - Lists journals that are accessible electronically through the library.  Note you need a password to access the list.
American Family Physician - Official journal of the American Academy of Family Physicians.  Full-text journal for free.
Annals of Internal Medicine - Full text journal access. No password required.
Archives of Internal Medicine - Users can view the current table of contents and abstracts for the articles, as well as archived issues of the journal. Registration required to get an e-mail of the table of contents.
British Medical Journal - Generally considered to be the best site of a medical journal on the internet.  Full-text articles with back issues.
Canadian Journal of Surgery - Full text journal.  No password required.
Canadian Medical Association Journal - (CMAJ). Offers selected articles from their most recent issue, recent press-releases, and on-line subscription.
Geriatrics - Full text journal. No password required.
Journal of American Medical Association- (JAMA). Offers abstracts of articles in their most recent issues, and a small number of full -text articles chosen from the editors of the journal.
The Lancet - Full subscribers to the Lancet can have free access to full text edition of Lancet on-line, a selection of features from the journal which also includes "Arcade", a new information center.
New England Journal of Medicine - (NEJM). Offers the weekly cover page of the journal. In addition, a search command allows you to search for the titles of articles which appeared in the journal between 1990 and the present time, on a particular topic or written by a certain author. There are full texts available on: Breast Cancer, Kidney Disease, and Molecular Biology.

TEXTBOOKS

British National Formulary (BNF) - The BNF is a rapid reference that provides up-to-date guidance on the selection, prescribing, dispensing and administration of drugs. It is updated every six months. It is published jointly by the British Medical Association and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.  It requires a user name and password, but it is free.
Electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC) - This is the British equivalent to the CPS in Canada.  It contains product monographs as well as patient information.  It requires a user name and password (same as the BNF) and is free.
AHFS-DI (Statref.com) - This site will allow electronic subscribers to access the latest full text electronic version of the American Hospital Formulary Service - Drug Information.  This site is user name protected.
AHFS-DI - This site houses the monograph updates, new monographs as well as monographs on diagnostic agents for the American Hospital Formulary Service - Drug Information.  Monographs for diagnostic agents were removed from the textbook due to space limitations.  Note: a user name and password are required but can be found on the last page in the Preface of the textbook.
Clin-eguide™: Clinical Decision Support is an on-line clinical decision support tool that provides evidence-based information for healthcare practitioners in the clinical setting. It integrates content from Ovid, Facts and Comparisons, Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins and other publishers.                                                                                       Facts and Comparisons - This site will allow the user to access various textbooks in electronic format including Facts and Comparisons, The Review of Natural Products, Drug Interaction Facts, Drug Imprint Index, Manufacturer's Index (US companies).  This is a pay site.
The Merck Manual - Includes the Merck Manual of Geriatrics and the Merck Manual of Drug Information
King's Guide to Parenteral Admixture - The electronic version of the binders.  It requires a password.

1 Up Health - This site offers the user access to medical resources that provide comprehensive and authoritative information and news on diseases, symptoms, tests, surgery, injuries, nutrition, medications, and poisons. Focuses on family and community health.
OPA-Drug Information and Research Centre - OPA-DIRC site that introduces the staff of the centre, and the services and fees associated with the service.  Contains links to other useful sites.
UNLONDIS - Contains information about the services provided by UH-LONDIS and how to subscribe.  Also contains some frequently asked questions.

 

Compendium of Smoking Cessation Services and Programs was developed by the Clinical Tobacco Intervention (CTI) program and is a cooperative effort between the Ontario Medical Association (OMA), the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association (OPA) and the Ontario Dental Association (ODA).  CTI provides a systematic approach to help medical, dental, and pharmacy professionals assist their patients with smoking cessation and prevent younger patients from starting. The Compendium provides practitioners with contact and content information about local interactive smoking cessation programs as well as a tool to help ensure continuity of care by referring patients to local programs and services.

BC Cancer Manual - An excellent resource for pharmacists dealing with chemotherapy agents. Contains monographs on various antineoplastic agents as well as information sheets for patients and other health care professionals.
Patient Information Sheets - This site is hosted by Cancer Care Ontario and includes patient information sheets on many chemotherapeutic agents and related drugs (Also in French).
Canadian Cancer Society - Lists location of cancer society centres in the country with their services (e.g. Patient Services Program, Public Education, projects to prevent smoking, increase the screening of certain cancers), as well as social events and conferences.
American Cancer Society - Information on research progress and treatment options (including unconventional therapies) for various cancers.
Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) Program in Evidence-Based Care - An excellent site with various evidence-based clinical practice guidelines developed by CCO as well as those developed internationally. Contains an extensive database of links to oncology related sites.

Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA)- Information on programs and services of the CDA as well as links to other sites. The professional section allows access to CDA position statements and clinical guidelines.
The Healing Handbook for Persons with Diabetes - A reference for newly diagnosed diabetic patients.
The Diabetes Centre - For pharmacists.  Includes current information on the disease, medications and clinical trials.
American Diabetes Association - Wide selection of information, including a professional site.
Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International (JDF)is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that funds diabetes research. Site provides information on research and clinical trials and access to publications for diabetics.


HIV/AIDS SITES

The Body: AIDS Clinical Trials - Designed for AIDS or HIV infected patients interested in taking part in experimental studies. It outlines the pros and cons of the studies and lists the names of various centers conducting these studies.
CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse -  A service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lists HIV/AIDS and STD resources and information on education and prevention, published materials and research findings.
HIVinsite - This site contains useful drug interaction databases.  It was created and is maintained by the UCSF centre for HIV information.
AIDS/HIV- Doctor's Guide to the Internet - The latest medical news and information for patients or friends/relatives of patients diagnosed with AIDS/HIV and related disorders.
CDC- Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention (DHAP) Home Page - CDC's HIV mission is to prevent HIV infection and reduce the incidence of HIV-related illness and death, in collaboration with community, state, national, and international partners. Various HIV/AIDS issues can be searched for a list of appropriate references.
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of AIDS Research (OAR) - Responsible for the scientific, budgetary, legislative, and policy elements of the NIH AIDS research program. Outlines the responsibilities of the OAR in the NIH as well as providing links into other offices within the institute.
Canadian Clinical Trials Network (CTN) - Information on clinical trials in HIV/AIDS in addition to links to other useful HIV/AIDS sites.
ACTIS (sponsored by CDC, FDA, NIAID, National Library of Medicine) - The AIDS Clinical Trials Information Service provides information on the location and purpose of each study, eligibility requirements, exclusion criteria and contact names and telephone numbers. ACTIS maintains two online databases, one on trial protocols and one on drug.

National Guideline Clearinghouse -(NGC):Offers evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Site sponsored by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research in partnership with the American Medical Association and the American Association of Health Plans.
CMA:Clinical Practice Guidelines - Access to clinical practice guidelines (e.g., anaesthesia, cardiology, clinical pharmacology, infectious diseases, etc.) as well as links to various publications and newsletters. The Table of Contents of the most recent of these Canadian journals may be accessed: Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal, Canadian Journal of Respiratory Therapy, Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine, Canadian Journal of Surgery, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Cancer Prevention and Control, and Clinical and Investigative Medicine. National Institute for Clinical Excellence - Part of the National Health Service (NHS), and its role is to provide patients, health professionals and the public with authoritative, robust and reliable guidance on current “best practice”.   The guidance will cover both individual health technologies (including medicines, medical devices, diagnostic techniques, and procedures) and the clinical management of specific conditions.
Recommended Clinical Practice Guidelines - The Guidelines Advisory Committee (GAC) is empowered by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ontario Medical Association to promote evidence-based health care in Ontario, by encouraging physicians to use the best available clinical practice guidelines.
Health Services Technology Assessment Texts (HSTAT) - contains full text documents including clinical practice guidelines.
Canadian Coordinating Office of Health Technology Assessment (CCOHTA) - contains documents prepared by CCOHTA on various drugs and non-drug products.  It is bilingual.

Natural Products Database - This is the Pharmacist's Letter Database of Natural Products.  Requires membership and can only be assessed with a password.  Database is constantly being updated. Contains useful concise reviews on several hundred natural products.
Alternative Medicine Review - AMR is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to providing accurate, timely and clinically relevant original articles on alternative medicine.  It includes monographs on selected agents.
HerbaLinks- This site was developed by the Iowa Drug Information Service (IDIS).  It contains links to other useful web sites that focus on herbal medicine.  Each site is rated for Pharmacy Information, Information Quality and Web site design.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine Center of Excellence - Authored by the Healthgate Data Corporation, but can access for free via the Shoppers Drug Mart site.
Botanical.com - an interactive site that provides brief monographs to various herbal products.
Quack Watch - Quackwatch, Inc., a member of Consumer Federation of America, is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to combat health-related frauds, myths, fads, and fallacies. Its primary focus is on quackery-related information that is difficult or impossible to get elsewhere.
