Web Publishing and eBooks - we've been putting a lot of
different information into askSam and publishing it on-line.
This month we have two more: Leonardo Da Vinci's Notebooks and
Hamlet by William Shakespeare. For those of you who are
interested in publishing your own information on-line, we're
hosting a free on-line seminar on October 13th. See below for
details (there's no charge - but pre-registration is required).
I'm a frequent Blog searcher (always like to see where askSam
has been mentioned). I recently found a couple of Blog search
engines that make this task much easier. See below.
Enjoy,
Phil

1) Searching Blogs
Searching Blogs is different from searching the Web. Blogs are
updated much more frequently (some multiple times per day), and
traditional search engines weren't designed with this type of
information in mind.
I've used a variety of search engines specifically made for
searching Blogs: Technorati, Daypop, Feedster - but I've not
found any single Blog search engine that covers a broad enough
range of sources. I often find information in one search engine
that's not in the others... and searching all the different
engines can be tedious.
Two new Blog search engines have made my life easier: Google's
Blog Search and Clusty, a meta-search engine for Blogs. Clusty
sends your search request to multiple Blog search engines and
compiles the results for you. Google Blog Search is still in
Beta, but works very well. For many searches, I found Google's
results to be more comprehensive and up-to-date than those
returned by Clusty's meta-searches. I use and recommend both
tools. You can check them out at:

2) Free On-line Seminar: Web Publishing With askSam
Putting information on the Web does not have to be complicated.
In fact, my 9 year old daughter has done it for MacBeth and
Hamlet (she insists I tell you that she's almost 10).
If you've been considering putting information on-line, reserve
a spot at our free on-line seminar on Thursday, Oct. 13th at
4:00 PM (Eastern time). Wade Goodman, our product manager, will
take you step-by-step through turning information into
searchable on-line databases.
You can view the content on the Web and listen in on a phone
call. We're limited to 25 attendees. For details or to reserve a
space, email wade at:

3) New: Leonardo Da Vinci's Complete Notebooks in askSam
We just posted Leonardo Da Vinci's Complete Notebooks in a free,
searchable askSam database -- search, browse, and analyze the
texts, either on-line or on your own PC.
Da Vinci's Notebooks contain thoughts, ideas, and tips from this
amazing thinker. The Notebooks are over 1,500 pages filled with
all sorts of information. It's not a page-turning novel, but a
fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of history's great
figures. The text is extremely useful in a searchable format.

4) New: Shakespeare's Hamlet in a Searchable askSam Database
We just posted Hamlet by William Shakespeare in a free,
searchable askSam database -- search, browse, and analyze the
text of the play, either on-line or on your own PC.
My 9 year old daughter put together this database... so if you've
been thinking that putting databases on the Internet is
complicated, talk to us (or attend the seminar we mention
above). It's easier than you think.

5) Tech Tip: Import Text Files That Don't Have a .TXT Extension
You probably already know that askSam is able to import data
from a large number of different sources and formats. However,
occasionally you may encounter a file whose 3-letter file
extension may not conform to the usual standards.
Recently some of our users have inquired if askSam is able to
import ASCII text files that do not have a .TXT extension. At
first look, askSam seems to require a TXT extension in order to
import these text files, but there is a workaround...
