With U.S. elections a week away, we've put together a Web page
with links to to different sources of political information.
We've put a variety of information into searchable askSam
databases: the texts from the presidential debates, the
convention speeches, and more.
For those that have little or no interest in U.S. politics:
- Read Anant's article on research strategies
- Take a look at SurfSaver 6
- Check out CIO Chris Feola's blog
- Manage tasks on-line with a free version of Project Desk
- NEW: TextPipe filter to convert legal documents for askSam
- NEW: Combine RFID technology and askSam with Tagit
Enjoy,

1) Links to Political Information and Downloadable askSam Files
The Web is a great place for political research. Unlike TV, you
get more than sound bites. You can thoroughly explore issues
that interest you and read the candidates' positions. We've also
included a link explaining the U.S. electorial process to help
some of our international readers better understand the U.S.
system.
We've put together a page with links to different sources of
political information. You can read the information released
by the candidates (including 3rd party candidates), check facts,
and sift through information provided by various non-partisan
sites.
In addition, we've put a variety of information into searchable
askSam databases: the texts from the presidential debates,
the convention speeches, and more.

2) Research Strategies
The Internet has turned us all into researchers, but the process
of gathering research has changed. Unlike "the old days" when
gathering research entailed an organized trek to a library, I
now find myself looking up bits of information while conversing
on the phone. Anant's article provides some sounds advice and
tips for both casual and professional researchers.

5) askSam CIO Chris Feola Joins the Blogosphere
In his new blog, An Imperfect Equilibrium, Chris ponders issues
ranging from business and technology to the media and
information. Chris' background as a journalist, new media guru,

6) Tagit - Combining RFID Technology with askSam.
For 15 years, Draegert and Lienert have been helping the
visually impaired work with computers. Their newest product,
Tagit, combines radio frequency ID tags (RFID) with askSam to
catalog and organize items in a home or office.
Tagit has enormous implications for the visually impaired, but I
also see Tagit being tremendously useful for those of us with
20/20 vision.

7) New TextPipe Filter - Bringing Statutes into askSam
Our friend Simon Carter from Australia sent us a new TextPipe
filter that brings statutes and other legal information into
askSam.
The filter inserts section numbers in front of lines making it
easier to identify the exact source of information located when
searching with askSam.
The filter converts information like this:
45 Something about the section
(1) A variant of the section's subject
a. variant of those variants
b. another variant of the variants in (1)
(2) blah blah
a. more yet
45.25 Something about the section
(1) A variant of the section's subject
a. variant of those variants
b. another variant of the variants in (1)
(2) blah blah
a. more yet
into this:
45 Something about the section
45(1) A variant of the section's subject
45(1)(a) variant of those variants
45(1)(b) another variant of the variants in (1)
45(2) blah blah
45(2)(a) more yet
45.25 Something about the section
45.25(1) A variant of the section's subject
45.25(1)(a) variant of those variants
45.25(1)(b) another variant of the variants in (1)
45.25(2) blah blah
45.25(2)(a) more yet
So when a line is located by a search, you immediately know the
section from which it came. You can download the filter for
free, and you can modify it for your own uses.
