Bringing Statutes into askSam with TextPipe

Our friend Simon Carter from Australia sent us a new TextPipe filter that brings statutes and other legal information into askSam.

The filter inserts section numbers in front of lines making it easier to identify the exact source of information located when searching with askSam.

The filter converts information like this:

45  Something about the section

     (1) A variant of the section's subject

          a. variant of those variants

          b. another variant of the variants in (1)

     (2) blah blah

         a. more yet

 45.25  Something about the section

     (1) A variant of the section's subject

          a. variant of those variants

          b. another variant of the variants in (1)

    (2) blah blah

           a. more yet

into this:

45   Something about the section

45(1)  A variant of the section's subject

45(1)(a)  variant of those variants

45(1)(b)  another variant of the variants in (1)

45(2)  blah blah

45(2)(a)  more yet

45.25   Something about the section

45.25(1)  A variant of the section's subject

45.25(1)(a)  variant of those variants

45.25(1)(b)  another variant of the variants in (1)

45.25(2)  blah blah

45.25(2)(a)  more yet

So when a line is located by a search, you immediately know the section from which it came. You can download the filter, and you can modify it for your own uses.

The filter is free, but you need a copy of TextPipe or TextPipe for askSam in order to run it.

To Use These Filters:

1. Download the filter you want to use.

2. Copy it into your TextPipe directory.

With TextPipe Pro:

1. Open the filter.

2. Select the file or files you wish to convert.

3. Run the filter.

With TextPipe for askSam

1. Either create a new askSam file, or open the askSam file into which you want to import the statutes.

2. Choose FILE - IMPORT (in askSam).

3. Select the file or files containing the statutes you wish to import.

4. In the askSam Import Dialog:

     Set the DOCUMENT DELIMITER

     Set USE FILTER to the filter "addlegalcontexttoeachline".

     Note: The USE FILTER option will only appear if TextPipe is installed on your computer.

5. Choose OK to start the import process.
