The Surf Report - vol. 45 www.askSam.com
===============================================================
Tuesday, September 28, 2004
Last week was a busy one; we released SurfSaver 6. Many thanks
to the Beta testers for your help. We've already had the first
press mention of SurfSaver, and if you've not yet checked out
the new version, it's worth a look.
Last month we set up an askSam database with a searchable
version of John Kerry and John Edward's "Our Plan for America".
This month, we've given equal time to President Bush. You'll
find a searchable version of "Agenda for America" on our Web
site. We'll be putting together similar databases for some of
the 3rd party candidates as well. In addition, we've also
created a database of selected speeches from the Democratic and
Republican National Conventions. These databases are free
downloads and can be used with askSam or with the free askSam
Viewer.
We also have a couple of new TextPipe filters to help generate
email lists and remove invalid email addresses.
It's been a tough month for the state of Florida. We've had
major storms to the south, east, and west of us, but we've made
it through with a bit of heavy rain and wind. Our thoughts and
prayers are with our neighbors who are experiencing difficult
times.

2) The World Clock - What Time is It Around the World?
I recently spent some time with a friend from New Zealand. He
has a small business and works from home... and frequently gets
calls in the middle of the night from U.S. customers.
Well, help is here - in the form of an extremely useful Web
site: The World Clock. The World Clock lists cities all over the
world and provides the local time in each place.
Another part of the site, called the Personal World Clock lets
you select a your own set of cities (e.g. Munich, Delhi,
Melbourne) and when you access the page, you see the current
local time in each of these cities.
Both the World Clock and the Personal World Clock take day light
saving time into consideration. They also allow you to configure
the time format (3:00 PM or 15:00).
The Web site is free (ad supported), and with friends and
business associates around the world, I find it tremendously
useful.

3) Speeches from the Democratic and Republican Conventions
We've created an askSam file containing selected speeches from
the Republican and Democratic national conventions. It's
interesting to search for specific terms (like economy or
education) and see the different perspectives. We've included a
report that will show all such terms from all speeches.
This is a free download and can be searched and viewed with
either askSam or with a copy of the free askSam Viewer.

4) Bush/Cheney "Agenda for America" in askSam Database
We've imported the text from "Agenda for America" President
Bush's book detailing his platform. The text is divided into
sections so you can easily search, browse, and analyze the
contents.
This is a free download and can be searched and viewed with
either askSam or with a copy of the free askSam Viewer.
For the next Surf Report, we'll be putting together similar
databases for some of the 3rd party candidates.

5) Tip of the month... Cleaning up Email Lists with TextPipe
When we Beta test our software, we get thousands of people
downloading the software. When new versions are released, we
need to notify the testers via email.
Of course, we want to make sure that our testers do not receive
multiple emails, and we also want to remove invalid emails from
our list (phil@aol or johnsmithyahoo.com).
We've created a TextPipe filter for this purpose. It's a free
download (although you'll need a copy of TextPipe or TextPipe
for askSam to run it).
