Cleaning Up Email Lists with TextPipe
When we Beta test our software, we get thousands of people downloading the software. When new versions are released, we need to notify the testers via email. Of course, we want to make sure that our testers do not receive multiple emails, and we also want to remove invalid emails from
our list (phil@aol or johnsmithyahoo.com).
We've created a TextPipe filter for this purpose. It's a simple filter that extracts validly formatted email addresses from a file that you specify. It also removes any duplicate email addresses it encounters.
We've prepared two filters.
Extract Email - Add Field.fll - When you direct it to a file, it will extract all email addresses, remove duplicates, and then insert the field Email[ before each email address (allowing these to be imported into askSam).
Extract Email.fll - This filter is identical to the first one, but it does not insert the Email[ field.
Both filters are free, but you need a copy of TextPipe or TextPipe for askSam in order to run the filters).
To Use These Filters:
1. Download the filter you want to use.
2. Copy it into your TextPipe directory.
With TextPipe Pro:
1. Open the filter.
2. Select the file or files containing the email addresses you wish to extract.
3. Run the filter.
With TextPipe for askSam
1. Either create a new askSam file, or open the askSam file into which you want to import the email addresses.
2. Choose FILE - IMPORT (in askSam).
3. Select the file or files containing the email addresses you wish to import.
4. In the askSam Import Dialog:
Set the DOCUMENT DELIMITER (normally to LINES 1)
Set USE FILTER to the filter you want to use.
Note: The USE FILTER option will only appear if TextPipe is installed on your computer.
5. Choose OK to start the import process.
TextPipe will process the file you chose to import and extract the email addresses. These emails will be imported into askSam.
