Mining Data from Mainframe Reports

The Surf Report - vol. 43                        www.askSam.com

================================================================

Thursday, July 29, 2004

It's been an interesting month. I spent several days in

Rochester, New York at the 14th annual Shareware Industry

Conference and Awards Ceremony. I'm delighted to report that

askSam won the 2004 award as the Best Business application.

We're quite honored that our peers and users gave us this

award, and I wanted to thank the askSam community for all the

support you've given us over the past 20 years.

I also spent more time than usual with corporate clients. One

recurring topic was mining data from mainframe reports. It's

easy to view the Internet as the source of all data, but

mainframe computers still hold enormous amounts of valuable data.

With the help of Simon Carter (CEO of Crystal Software - makers

of TextPipe) I've written a brief article on how to get this

information into askSam.

The 9/11 Commission just released a report on the 9/11 tragedy.

I know the topic is being heavily researched. We've imported

this report into an askSam database that you can download and

search (in askSam or using our free askSam Viewer). See below

for details.

Best,

1) Mining Data From Mainframe Reports

It's easy to view the Internet as the source of all data, but

mainframe computers still hold enormous amounts of valuable

data. Often you only have access to these reports in formats

that are difficult to get onto your PC. Here are some tips on

how to convert mainframe reports into text files that you can

import, search, and analyze with askSam.

2) 9/11 Commission Report in askSam Database

On July 22, 2004, the 9/11 Commission released its final report

detailing the circumstances surrounding the September 11, 2001

terrorist attacks, and listing a series of recommendations for

"actions to guard against future attacks" derived from their

inquiries.

The report has been made available to the public as a pdf file,

available for free at http://www.9-11commission.gov/, and in

paperback from Norton for $8. To facilitate locating specific

sections of the report, we've imported the pdf file into an

askSam database that you can download or view on-line.

The 9/11 Commission Report askSam database can be searched using

either askSam, or the askSam Viewer.

3) Faster Downloads from askSam

The traffic to our Web site has dramatically increased over the

first 6 months of the year. We certainly welcome the increased

interest in our products, but it also put quite a strain on our

server. This past week, we moved the askSam, Citation, and

SurfSaver products to a special download server that will give

you much faster access.

So give askSam, Citation, or SurfSaver a try:

4) Author uses askSam for Text Book Research

Congratulations to long time askSam user, Marquita Hill. She's

just completed the second edition of her textbook, Understanding

Environmental Pollution. She covers a wide range of topics and

uses askSam to organize and manage all this information. We're

always delighted when our product is used for such worthy

causes.

BTW - if you publish anything using askSam, please let us know.

We'll be happy to mention it.

5) askSam Wins SIA 2004 Award for Best Application

At the 14th annual Shareware Industry Awards ceremony, askSam 5.1

received the award for "Best Application".  The Shareware

Industry Awards ceremony honors the top shareware products in a

variety of categories. Representatives of over 100 software

companies attended the awards ceremony which was held in

Rochester, New York on July 17th. We're proud that our industry

peers and customers have selected us for this honor. We've been

working on askSam for the past 20 years, it's quite rewarding to

be recognized in this way.

"askSam is an essential part of my software tool chest. I can research and collect data from anywhere and any source. Once it is in askSam I can edit, rearrange, organize, and search the information easily. Then I can present it and make it totally useful for other people via the web or CD. Fantastic!"
