Last_Update April 6, 2006

Question I just installed Web Publisher on a Windows 2003 Server, but when I try to access Web Publisher Administrator, nothing shows up. Am I missing something?

Answer Yes. IIS web server in Windows 2003 is locked down by default. Microsoft made this change in Windows 2003 server for security reasons. What this means is that, some applications like CGI scripts are turned off by default. You will need to explicitly turn them on if you wish to utilize them. Since Web Publisher is nothing but a CGI program, therefore, it is turned off by default when you install it on Windows 2003 Server.

Resolution Follow these steps.

Load IIS from the Administrative tools in the Control Panel by clicking Start -> Administrative Tools -> IIS Manager (or loading the Control Panel, entering the Administrative Tools folder, and double clicking IIS Manager).

Click the name of your computer then click "Web Service Extensions", on the left side of the main frame you will see a green arrow pointing to a link that says "Add a new Web service extension...", click that link.

In that window, where it asks for the extension name you can put anything, like "Web Publisher" and under the "Required Files" section, click the Add button.

Click the Browse button to select Web Publisher EXE files.

Browse upto the directory where Web Publisher EXE files are installed. By default, they are installed at -- C:\Inetpub\Scripts.

Select as_web5.exe and click Open.

Click the Add button one more time, and select WebAdmin5.exe. Once finished, check the "Set extension status to be allowed" checkbox.

Finally, click OK. You will notice an entry for Web Publisher and that it is allowed.

Lastly, test out the Web Publisher by going to the URL. This will display the Web Publisher documentation. --

http://localhost/scripts/as_web5.exe?command=first&file=wpubhelp5.ask

or

http://localhost/scripts/webadmin5.exe

This will display the Admin. It requires a User Name and Password. Use the one that you use to login to your server.
