    Version 4.x Professional

Question I have askSam 4.x Professional, and I am not able to index my files. I go to FILE > INDEX and the option is greyed out.

Answer This could be caused by a couple of things:

Resolution

1. First Document is "Read Only":

Open your database and go to DOCUMENT > PROPERTIES. Click the SETTINGS tab, and make sure that "Read Only" is set to NO. If it is set to YES, change it to NO and click OK. You should now be able to click on FILE > INDEX and index the file. (This is a bug that was corrected in askSam 5)

2. Database is "Read Only":

Open your Windows Explorer. Browse to the directory that contains your database. Right-click on it and choose "Properties". At the bottom of the file properties is a checkbox that says "Read Only". Uncheck this to gain write access to the file. Now, launch askSam and try to index the file.

"askSam is an essential part of my software tool chest. I can research and collect data from anywhere and any source. Once it is in askSam I can edit, rearrange, organize, and search the information easily. Then I can present it and make it totally useful for other people via the web or CD. Fantastic!"
