Question How do I set up askSam 5 on my network?

Answer With your askSam network license, you have two main installation options: (Method 1) Install askSam on all workstations in the network and keep the askSam database(s) on one main server, or (Method 2) install askSam on the server only and have the workstations run the application over the network without installing askSam on each individual workstation. No one method is better than the other, however some users choose not to install the program on each machine. This comes in particularly handy when we release maintenance updates, so the program will not have to be reinstalled on each workstation.

Resolution

Method 1 - Installation on each workstation: Please follow the standard installation instructions found in your “Getting Started” manual. After installing askSam on each workstation, you can go to FILE > OPEN and browse to the askSam file(s) stored on the main server.

Method 2  Installation on server: Please follow the instructions below:

1)     Install askSam5 on the main server following the instructions outlined in your “Getting Started” manual.

2)     From each workstation, browse to the program directory on the server and double-click the NetSetup.exe. (By default this directory is \Program Files\askSam\askSam5 on the server)  This utility will update any system DLL files required to run askSam (if necessary).

If you installed askSam5 on the server from a CD-ROM, the NetSetup.exe should already be present in the askSam5 program directory. If you installed askSam on the server from a downloaded EXE file, you must download the NetSetup.exe from the following URL: http://www.askSam.com/askSam5/NetSetup.exe. After the download is complete, copy the NetSetup.exe file to the askSam program directory on the server.

3)     After viewing the license agreement, you will be prompted to choose a destination directory. This directory should be set to the askSam5 program directory on the server, and not the local C: drive.

After the network setup is complete, it will create a shortcut on the desktop to the askSam.exe on the server, as well as add the askSam program group under the START menu.
