Question
How do I manually install askSam for Windows?
Answer
You must copy the files off of the installation disk and expand each of the files individually.
Resolution
Use the following steps:
1. Open a DOS Prompt and create a directory on your hard drive named as_win
2. Change to the as_win directory
3. Put disk 1 in the disk drive, type the following at the prompt and press ENTER;
xcopy a:\*.* /s
4. When the disk has finished copying, place disk 2 in the disk drive. Type the following at the prompt and press ENTER; xcopy a:\*.* /s
5. When the disk has finished copying, type the following at the prompt and press ENTER;
expand AS_V100.DL_ AS_V100.DLL
6. When the file has finished expanding, type the following at the prompt and press ENTER;
expand AUTOREC.DL_ AUTOREC.DLL
7. Continue this process using the following commands:
expand AS_SPELL.DL_ AS_SPELL.DLL
expand ACCUSFT5.DL_ ACCUSFT5.DLL
expand ASKSAM.EX_ ASKSAM.EXE
expand VLIST.DL_ VLIST.DLL
expand DICT.D_ DICT.D
expand W4W49F.DL_ W4W49F.DLL
expand W4W19F.DL_ W4W19F.DLL
expand W4W49T.DL_ W4W49T.DLL

13. Type the following at the prompt and press ENTER; cd..
14. type the following at the prompt and press ENTER; cd OFFICE
15. Type the following at the prompt and press ENTER; expand OFFICE.AS_ OFFICE.ASK
16. Continue this process using the following commands:
expand AS_NET.AS_ AS_NET.ASK
expand NETINFO.AS_ NETINFO.ASK
expand HTML-DOC.AS_ HTML-DOC.ASK
expand HTML-ARC.AS_ HTML-ARC.ASK
expand NEWSGRP.AS_ NEWSGRP.ASK
expand LETTERS.AS_ LETTERS.ASK
expand CONTACTS.AS_ CONTACTS.ASK

17. Now type the following at the prompt and press ENTER; del *.??_
18. To create an icon in Windows 3.1, or 3.11 go into Windows and follow these steps:
a. From the file manager click on FILE -> NEW
b. Select Program Item and name the item askSam for Windows
c. On the command line enter C:\AS_WIN\ASKSAM.EXE
d. Enter c:\as_win as the working directory
e. Click on OK
19. To create an icon in Windows 95, go into Windows and follow these steps:
a. Click the right mouse button on the desktop.
b. Choose New -> Shortcut
c. On the command line, enter C:\AS_WIN\ASKSAM.EXE
d. Choose Next
e. Name the shortcut askSam and choose Finish
