Question

I imported my CIM messages into askSam for Windows. The only problem is that messages imported via that filter cause a very large *.ask file (thanks to all the buttons etc.).  Is thereanother way of importing the messages without the buttons?  Yes, I am willing to forego               the ease of keeping the link between replies and messages.

Answer

You would need to import the file with the CIM filter, then export the file to ascii format, making sure you set a string as the document delimiter. Then import the ascii text file into a new askSam file and the file will be much smaller, but it will not have the links.

Resolution

Use the following steps:

1. Choose File -> New and name the file.  Choose OK.

2. Choose File -> Import

3. Under File Type, choose CompuServe files

4. Select the files to be imported and choose OK

5. After the import, choose File -> Pack

6. Choose File -> Export -> Entire File

7. Under File Type, choose Text Files

8. Click on Set Options

9. Select String and type @@ in the box.  Choose OK

10. Name the file tmp.txt and choose OK to export

11. Choose close when the export is complete and then choose File -> New

12. Give the new file a name and choose OK

13. Choose File -> Import

14. Under File Type, select Text Files

15. Click on Set Options and select string.  Type @@ in the box.

16. Select Remove Delimiter String and choose OK

17. Select the tmp.txt file and choose OK to import.  Once imported, this file will contain just the CompuServe data, not the buttons and links.

"askSam is an essential part of my software tool chest. I can research and collect data from anywhere and any source. Once it is in askSam I can edit, rearrange, organize, and search the information easily. Then I can present it and make it totally useful for other people via the web or CD. Fantastic!"
