Question When I try to to use certain fonts in askSam it automatically switches to another font. This doesn't occur with all of my fonts, just certain ones. Why is this occurring?
Answer askSam only recognizes ~100 fonts. askSam uses the fonts installed in Windows.
If you have more than 100 fonts you need to follow these steps to put the fonts in an particular
order so you can have the fonts you want to use with askSam as the first 100 fonts.
The fonts are located in the c:\windows\fonts directory. A record of them is kept in the Windows '9x registry also.
The registry listings are located at this directory of the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Fonts
****NOTE: THIS HAS BEEN FIXED ASKSAM 4.0, WHICH CAN HOLD ANY NUMBER OF FONTS****
Resolution The steps that follow change the configuration setting on your computer. To
make sure you can restore the original settings, we recommend that you have a back up of your system before doing this. This fix will not allow you to use all of your fonts with askSam.However, it will allow you to select which 100 fonts you want to use with askSam. If you have more than 100 fonts installed on your system, askSam will only use the first 100 fonts that were installed on your system.
What you have to do is uninstall your fonts (except for your windows system font) and reinstall them installing the ones you want to use with askSam first. To do that follow these steps.
1. Click on Start -> Setting -> Control Panel -> Display -> Appearence
2. Scroll through the different items to see what fonts Windows is using as "System Fonts". Make a note of these fonts.
3. Close out Display Screen and Control Panel.
4. Click on Start -> Run.
5. In the box, type the following and press <ENTER>;
regedit
6. Go to this registry directory: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Fonts.
7. On the right you should see your fonts listed with the font file name.
8. Write down the font file name for the "System Fonts" that you wrote earlier.
Note: Some fonts take multiple files (one for Bold, Italic, and so forth) so be sure that you write those down too.
9. Delete out all the fonts out registry except for those "System Fonts".
10. Close out the registry.
11. Click on Start -> Shut Down -> Restart in MS-DOS Mode.
12. When the DOS Prompt comes up type the following and press <ENTER>:
cd c:\windows\fonts
13. Type the following and press <ENTER>;
md c:\temp
14. Type the following and press <ENTER>;
move *.* c:\temp
15. Type the following and press <ENTER>;
move c:\temp\desktop.ini c:\windows\fonts
16. Now you ned to move your system fonts back. To do that type the follwoign and press <ENTER>;
move c:\temp\filename.ext c:\windows\fonts
Note: You will replace filename.ext with the filename and extension of the system fonts you made a note of earlier. You would need to do this for all the files pertaining to your system fonts.
17. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your machine.
18. From your desktop click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Fonts
19. Click on File ->Install New Font
20. Under drives select c:
21. Under folders click on the c:\ folder then click on the temp folder.
