Scanning information into askSam

Would you like to be able to scan paper documents directly into askSam and be able to search them? askSam does not have a direct scan feature but does allow you to put scanned material into askSam. You can do this in a couple of ways.

Direct Scan

By using certain OCR packages you can OCR material directly into askSam at the current cursor position. Text scanned in this way is immediately ready to be edited, formatted or searched. Two OCR packages that we know of that do this are...

1. Scansoft's Omni Pro v.11 OCR - Omni Pro has a feature called Direct Scan. When you set up Omni Page and Direct Scan, the software puts an option on the askSam FILE menu named "Acquire text". To use this feature simply place your cursor in a new or existing askSam document, making sure you are at the position where you want the scanned material to be inserted, and click on FILE-> ACQUIRE TEXT. Omni Pro will scan, perform OCR and place the text

directly into the document

2. Xerox Textbridge - Textbridge also places it's name in FILE menu. To use this feature simply place your cursor in a new or existing askSam document, making sure you are at the position where you want the scanned material to be inserted, and choose the TEXTBRIDGE option from the FILE menu. Textbridge will scan, perform OCR and place the text directly into the document.

Using askSam's Import Feature

If you do not have access to one of these direct scan software or do not want you to replace you existing software you can still scan information into askSam using askSam;s import feature. To do this you can...

1. Use you current scanning software to OCR the information (turn it into text)

2. Save the text into a format askSam can import (ie. Text, RTF, Word, etc.)

3. Go into the askSam file or specific document where you want to store the information

4. Choose FILE -> IMPORT

5. Change the import type to match the scanned file you just saved

6. Choose the file and import

note: to import this file into a specific location in your askSam file use the "Import Location" option to select - End of File; Top of File; After Current Document; End of Current Document."
