In 1985 Mack McKinney, then a professor at Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, took an interest in information management. He realized that the material encountered by students and faculty did not fit into the rigid structure of a traditional database. Research information was generally more textual - it could be a few sentences, a few paragraphs, or hundreds of pages. Professor McKinney saw the need for a program flexible enough to manage research, lecture notes, bibliographical information, and other unstructured data. askSam was born.
