Citation and BookWhere: Streamlining the Research Process

Citation and BookWhere can transform your computer and internet connection into a powerful research tool.

During the initial part of the research process, use BookWhere 2000 to search libraries and databases of published information on the Internet for materials on your topic. You can simultaneously search library collections and specialized databases including MEDLINE, PsycINFO, the Library of Congress, OCLC's WorldCat, and hundreds of others worldwide. When you locate potential source works for your research, you can add these records directly to your Citation datafile. You can then use Citation to tag these works as part of a reading list - and use it to store your notes as you read through the material.

When you get ready to write your paper, all your notes and references will be at your fingertips!

It's an easy, efficient, and thorough way to locate materials on your topic.

Here's how to use BookWhere with Citation:

1.   Start BookWhere, and select the database to search from a pre- defined list of hundreds of libraries and databases on the internet.

You will be able to define certain libraries as Favorites for quick selection. You can search as many libraries or online sources at the same time as you like. It is probably a good idea to search at least the Library of Congress along with your, to make certain you are locating all the possible materials that match your search criteria. If your university provides access to OCLC and/or OVID, you will be able to search these databases as well for journal articles and other periodically published sources.

2.   Define a "query" by entering your search criteria:

You can use the search dialog to search by Author, title, or Subject, and you will have the option of defining more complex searches with the power dialog.

In our example here, we will be searching the Library of Congress catalog for publications authored by Paul Brest.

Clicking the Search button initiates the search.

3.   BookWhere searches all the libary and online systems you have selected, and displays the search results:

You can display the full record from the library system for any entry in the list by highlighting it.

4.   After you have browsed though the search results, you can highlight records you want to add to your Citation datafile or download to a text file on your computer.

In our example, we are going to highlight all the records found in our search, and then click File, Export to add them to a Citation datafile.
