1) Google News Goes Local
Google News is a great starting point for keeping up to date on
current news around the world. Google News crawls thousands of
sources from around the world to give you different perspectives
on each story.
But what about the news for your hometown?
Last week Google News announced a new feature to find your local
news by simply typing in a city name or zip code. Google is not
the first to offer a local news search but it's unique in that
they create a local section for any city, state, or country in the world and include thousands of sources. But that's not all,
Google Local News doesn't just look at the byline or source but
instead every word in every story to understand what location the
news is about and where the source is located.
Even with local news Google still groups multiple sources on a
story. The top stories for a given area will be at the top of your results.

2) 2009 U.S. Government Budget
The Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 2009
contains the Budget Message of the President, information on the
President's budget and management priorities, and budget overviews organized by agency.
The askSam version of the Budget allows you to search, browse,
and analyze the budget text. You can search the budget online or
download it to your computer and search using your copy of askSam or the free askSam Viewer.

4) Free Stuff - Giveaway of the Day
Do you like free software? Stupid question, right? Well, if so,
you have to try the Give Away of the Day website. There's not much to explain - the name says it all. Each day they give away one licensed software and game that you would otherwise have to
purchase. No strings attached. Each product is only offered for
one day. But if you miss it there will be another free offer
tomorrow.
As I write I am downloading, for free, a great software for
recovering data from flash drives, USB drives, cameras, etc. (reg. $29.95) and a great puzzle software for my kids (reg.
$14.95).
You will defiantly want to bookmark, check back daily and maybe
even sign-up for their newsletter.

5) askSam Tech Tip: Speed Up and Back Up Files at the same time
The PACK feature in askSam (FILE -> PACK) is a great way to keep
your askSam databases running at peak performance. Each time you
pack askSam removes wasted space within you database making it
smaller, more manageable and more efficient.
Also, each time you pack askSam creates a backup of your file.
After your second pack you have three versions of your file. The
current file (FILE.ASK), the most recent backup (FILE.BAK) and an older backup (FILE.SAV).
To access your backup files to recover information you may have
deleted by accident, simply...
- Choose FILE -> OPEN
- Browse to the folder containing your askSam file
- Type *.bak or *.sav
(depending on which backup you wish to access)
- Press ENTER
- Double click the appropriate backup file
Backup files will open in askSam just like a regular askSam file. You can choose to do a FILE -> SAVE AS to save it back as an
original askSam file or copy and paste to retrieve information.
