Version 7 Stops Working
Posted: 10 Sep 2009 03:08 PM
Just paid for upgrade to Version 7, downloaded, entered new Serial#, and randomly getting Vista Home Premium 64 bit Error "AskSam 7.0 has stopped working. No solution is offered by the online search and the details are:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Version: 7.0.2.143
Application Timestamp: 4a0b26b6
Fault Module Name: MFC80.DLL
Fault Module Version: 8.0.50727.1833
Fault Module Timestamp: 482bc3e3
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 00023adf
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: fd00
Additional Information 2: ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160
Additional Information 3: fd00
Additional Information 4: ea6f5fe8924aaa756324d57f87834160

I cannot determine a pattern for when this will occur but each time I reload, sooner or later this happens.
Upon opening each of my old files the offer is made to upgrade which I accept and a new file is created - with the extension "as6" - strange (an oversight).
I did not uninstall version 6 before installing 7.
What more information is needed to help you help me.

Me dumb on my comment about the as6, that is the backup of the new ask file. Tried again this morning and get the Vista dialog that askSam stopped working - again cannot ascertain pattern.

Gave up trying to ascertain a pattern leading up to the lock ups.
I had installed 7 over 6 and found both uninstalls remained in the Programs & Features dialog so deleted both and reinstalled both 6 and 7 in separate folders. Now 7 rebells reporting "locked by another on another work station. Had to use Task Manager to kill.

Workaround found..... after several days of testing foud that the problem only occurred when I used my askSam single page file with a list of hyperlinks to my various folders. I have used this approach for years and of course askSam now has such a feature built into the program. Anyway when I installed version 7, in a separate folder, and moved my data also to a separate folder, had to change all the hyperlinks. I deleted all the hyperlinks but add them one at a time. When in a hurry I sometimes opened a folder directly from askAam's main menu, one for which I had not updated the hyperlink. That never caused a problem so started to suspect "my" menu. Of course it was working fine with 6. I deleted and recreated and low and behold the problem solved. Of course I cannot explain, yet a file with deleted hyperlinks was interfering somehow with others folder opened via corrected hyperlinks.

Ed, you are truly one hand clapping in the forest. Good for you for solving your own problem, because you'll grow a long beard before anyone here answers your questions. Thanks for sharing.
