Using East Asian languages in Asksam 5 Posted: 19 Oct 2004 01:32 PM |
Hi all,
I have a problem with writing East Asian scripts in Asksam 5.12. I am using Windows XP professional and the Microsoft Pinyin IME 2003 to enter Chinese/Japanese etc. characters in a text. The problem is: When I try to enter characters in Asksam, a bar opens and shows a selection of characters from which I can choose (so far, that's all correct). The characters, however, are not directly inserted into the text (which would be the usual way), but into a small window with a green arrow saying "Finalize the string". When I then press "Enter" the programm displays one question mark for each character chosen. Of course, I have selected a Chinese font first.
I have used previous versions of Asksam in combination with Twinbridge to write Chinese and it worked well. What am I doing wrong?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Best

You can't use the Microsoft IME with Asksam because Asksam does not support unicode characters.
For CJ in asksam you have to use Twinbridge -- but you'll need a recent version of TB that supports XP! It does work -- I use it. The disadvantage is that the coding is different from (incompatible with) unicode which presumably eventually we'll all be using.
So the real question is, will AS 6 support unicode? Nothing I have seen suggests they will -- they seem little interested in what may be thought of as basic wordprocessing functions. I will wait and see, but if they don't I will start looking for alternatives (after over 15 years using AS). |

| Sorry, but there are no plans to include Unicode support in the next version of askSam. |
