1.Re: Non-English and non-Latin characters
Posted by ben on 10/23/2006 10:29:15 AM
I'm sorry, but this is currently a limitation of askSam's editor. There is no way that I know of to enter Chinese characters into askSam.

This is something that might be possible with a future version of askSam.

To do a specific phrase search in askSam, you must enter your text in brackets. Try searching for the following:

4.Re: conditional and if statements
Posted by ben on 6/2/2005 6:00:37 PM
Yes, you can use the conditional IF statements when creating a Mail Merge document. These behave the same as they would in a report. The IF statement command can be found under the MAIL MERGE > IF STATEMENT.. menu when editing your mail merge document.

I recommend trying the latest build of SurfSaver 6.1:

http://www.asksam.com/asksam6/build805/SurfsaverSetup.exe

You should also go to TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS, click the ADVANCED tab. Scroll down to the section for "Security" and make sure the setting that says "Allow active content to run in files on My Computer" is CHECKED.
6.Importing AOL email into askSam
Posted by ben on 8/11/2008 5:21:12 PM
Hi guys,

I just stumbled across an interesting AOL help article that might be useful to askSam users who are also using AOL.

It looks like AOL is loosening up a little, and are now allowing users to download email into different email apps, which could be beneficial to askSam users

In the past, the only way to import AOL email into askSam was to go through some kind of a 3rd-party app that would translate AOL's proprietary email format into ...
7.Re: OpenOffice documents
Posted by ben on 4/19/2004 11:36:31 AM
This product has not been tested with askSam.

If you are not able to import directly from OpenOffice, you might be able to save your documents to a format that askSam is able to import, such as Rich Text Format (*.RTF) or Plain Text (*.TXT).

Perhaps some other users on this forum can share some of their experiences importing from this application.
8.Re: Creating Cabinets/Folders
Posted by ben on 5/2/2005 5:30:46 PM
You can create SurfSaver folders from within the SurfSaver "Save" dialog box. You can find these icons in the upper-left corner of the screen.

SurfSaver "folders" are askSam databases that contain your saved websites. "Cabinets" are the containers that you use to store your SurfSaver "folders".

What you see in SurfSaver as a "folder", is actually a database file with an ASK file extension. For example, if you ...
9.Re: Vista Compatibility?
Posted by ben on 2/2/2007 5:51:53 PM
The current version of askSam (6.1.2.805) runs well on Windows Vista.

At the moment, we have encountered only one compatibilty issue, and this is regarding the "Save Web Page to askSam" right-click option in IE. We are currently working on a fix for this problem, and will be releasing a patch which addresses this soon.

(currently 6.1.2.805)

Keefe,
Did you encounter any error messages during the installation?

Also, did you install the application under the same username as the one you are using to launch the program?
12.Re: Relational data bases
Posted by ben on 6/1/2006 3:11:29 PM
There is a way you can create simple clickable hyperlinks that point to a document in a different database.
However, there is no way to link field data from one file to another so that it automatically populates fields. askSam does not contain relational functions, such as this.
13.Re: email import
Posted by ben on 6/20/2007 11:55:41 AM
Bill,

I recommend uninstalling again. After removing askSam, open your Windows Explorer and manually delete the directory found at C:\Program Files\askSam\askSam6.

After doing this, you should download askSam from the link below:

http://www.asksam.com/asksam6/build809/askSamFullSetup.exe
14.Re: email import
Posted by ben on 6/27/2007 4:39:02 PM
Check to make sure there is a file in that location. (c:\Program Files\askSam\askSam6\email.inf)

Could you tell me what version of Windows you are running? Are you logged in as an administrator?

William,
This sounds like a bug that was reported in an earlier build of askSam 6. You should try uninstalling your current version and then download and install the latest build from our site:

16.Re: Importing JPEG images
Posted by ben on 11/13/2007 10:00:10 AM
To insert a JPEG image into an askSam document, click EDIT > INSERT > PICTURE. This will allow you to browse and select an image to insert, and the image will be displayed in the database. You can then go back and add captions if you like.

Bevan and mfelix,

I'm sorry that build 808 did not fix the problem. I have been running build 808 for some time and have not seen that error, so I had hoped that the problem wouldn't happen with that build.

After reviewing the feedback from users here on the forum and thru email, the developer has compiled a new build 809 which addresses the "Invalid Hyperlink" error. It can be downloaded by clicking the URL below:

BevanJ,

What build of askSam are you running? You can find out by clicking HELP > ABOUT ASKSAM. If you recently downloaded the trail version, I believe you should be running build 6.1.2.805.

We have had a handful of users report this problem in the last couple of weeks, and we are trying to determine the cause.

You might want to try downloading the askSam 808 update patch. You can get it at the link below:

Posted by ben on 8/2/2007 3:07:45 PM
Matt,

Try keeping Outlook running in the background while you are setting up the askSam import profile. After you click through step one, ALT+TAB over to Outlook to see if it is prompting you with a security warning (newer versions of Outlook have a security feature that detects if another application is trying to access it). If it is prompting you to allow access, give it permission to do so for 10 mins. After that, you should be able to go back to askSam and see your ...
22.Re: * Where are the Saved Items? *
Posted by ben on 1/7/2008 4:16:49 PM
Fred,

It sounds as though SurfSaver does not know the location of your cabinets directory. This is the directory where your SurfSaver data is located.

You can redefine your cabinets directory by clicking the OPTIONS icon in the SurfSaver toolbar (it's the one just to the right of the magnifying glass). In Options, you should see a tab called "Cabinet Location". Click the button on the right that looks like 3 dots (...) to browse to the directory ...
23.Re: Administrator problem--Vista install

A part of this problem is that Vista will not allow you to write directly to files found in the "Program Files" directory, even if you are logged in as an administrator.

Fortunately, we have found a workaround. The steps are essentially the same as in the FAQ article, but there is a change in the way you save the modified INI file. Please follow my steps below:

If you get this error, proceed to install the program in 30-day trial mode. After the ...
