1.Re: Dos version in Vista command box
Posted by aderoy on 12/30/2008 10:22:07 AM
I have great success using either VMware (cost) or Sun (free) virtual machines to make applications work within Vista or XP for that matter.

Use mostly for testing applications or 'sandboxing' - when done I erase and reload the vm from backup. Never interfers with my 'running' machine.

The Sun VM (virtual machine) is freeware and can be found via this link:

2.Re: Problems importing email
Posted by aderoy on 12/10/2008 1:45:19 PM
Mulberry uses true mbx (unix/window/OSx format) standard. If you want to follow the standard as per the RFC then this is the one to use.

Both Eudora and PocoMail use a modified version of this mbx 'standard'. Both of these can be set to store attachments outside of the mbx file. The storing of messages within the mbx file is also changed. This is to get around a problem with having a line starting with 'From email address', there is a message delimiter and padding between each ...

5.Error when trying to Import
Posted by aderoy on 3/27/2008 6:20:13 PM
Version askSam 6.1.2.811
WinXP Pro SP2 1GB RAM

On trying to import anything (e-mail, RTF etc) via File | Import an error dialog is displayed:
The Import DLL is having problems, please contact Tech Support...

Tried to re-install the application and the error still exists.
6.Re: Error when trying to Import
Posted by aderoy on 3/28/2008 11:34:20 AM
Thank you for the hints, but I have never run Eudora, nor has the email client changed since 1999.
The machine in question is using Pegasus

I have tried the MAPI.DLL trick, no joy.

Checked the full backup tape from the weekend and monthly from 6 months ago - file date/size had not changed. This is a recent maybe two weeks issue, was working properly for RTF imports in Feb.

The last time I tried the search on the forum it was not ...

Steps that seem to have worked:

Removed askSam using RevoUnistall
cycle power
Removed the mapi32.dll from the prefetch queue (cache)
cycle power
Re-install askSam 6.1.2.811
Now Import works as before {happy days}.

Why did this happen? Unsure, did find it rather interesting that askSam uses over 900 registry entries that are left after the built-in uninstall completed.

Back to using the application, can ...

Sounds like you may be using Unicode characters? Is this the case? May help with askSam support.

9.Re: Changing Folder and Document Order within a file
Posted by aderoy on 5/17/2007 8:18:33 PM
It is my understanding that the Folder List (View | Folder -- Control G) is sorted in Alpha order by default.

The field that has been assigned for the 'Folder' list via the option button (top right of the Folder dialog) allows for sort (default), then a sub allows for Alpha, Numeric, Date types.

Advanced options allow for more than one field to be used.

Folders in askSam are not like Parent/Child tree (File Explorer etc) items.
10.Re: import of large Thunderbird email archive
Posted by aderoy on 3/13/2007 10:16:44 AM
If you need to be able to convert Thunderbird to another format... try Aid4Mail from Fookes Software. The pro version will convert Thunderbird to Outlook .pst (2000 - 2003 versions) without any problem.

Had to do this for my place of work (Law Firm).

http://www.aid4mail.com

Cost less than $50 USD, well worth it.

The standard version will convert Thunderbird mailbox to formats the askSam can read/import properly.
11.askSam v 6.1.2.798 file corruption
Posted by aderoy on 2/21/2007 7:13:05 PM
OS: WinXP Pro 1GB Ram, all current security patches.
I have been getting corruption on a number of my files in the last week. These files are anywhere from 200kb to just over 1gb.

Seems that after I pack the file, close the file and reopens OK. If the application is closed then reopened a few hours later -- an error dialog is displayed. Yes I did try the file/pack/close then reopen immediately no issues.

Tried to install the latest version 6.1.2.805 (?) ...

Posted by aderoy on 3/13/2007 10:05:23 AM
Seems to have worked. Now must try to figure out the problem with add/remove of askSam.

The file that was giving me the most problem was too large for email -- just under 1GB.

Looking at the file via diff I was able to find the header information was 'different' in the first 2kb of the file. This is from the safety copy with no changes to the corrupt file (open, go to record number xxx, go to end / start of file then close).

Test of HD with ...

The easy way is to use a peice of software from Sperry Software.

Link can be found here:

http://www.sperrysoftware.com/Outlook/Send-Individually.asp

I have used this to support one company that had mass mailings for anywhere upto 15k users. Import from Word or Excel was easy.

Quick cut from the website.

15.Re: backing up asksam
Posted by aderoy on 2/4/2007 7:53:54 PM
Could the proble be as simple as not having write ability to the file? IIRC askSam opens the file for writing.

Copy the .ask file to your local drive, rightclich and remove the 'ReadOnly' flag from the file. Should open without a problem.
16.Re: AskSam vs TreePad
Posted by aderoy on 7/24/2006 12:43:35 PM
One item that is a great benefit for me is the Reporting found in askSam. Treepad, MyInfo etc do not have the 'database' reporting features.

askSam may be the only freeform program that has this feature, have not run into any other application thus far.

Since this is one of the things I need and have been using askSam for (since 1987... IIRC) there is no option for me.

Yes I have purchased licenses for Zoot, TreePad Business, TexNotes, TexNotes ...
17.Re: Importing from WordPerfect Mail?
Posted by aderoy on 6/14/2006 2:49:07 PM
Wordprefect mail is a renamed version of Bloomba Email and stores the data in .mbx format. This is a standard storage format. askSam does not import .mbx via the menus, had to use Netscape on a test 'folder' after removing the .mbx extension from the filename.

Would it be possible to add another 'Email Import' option - .mbx / .mbox ?
18.Re: AS 6 Help File opens MSN.com window

If this is still happening check to see if you have a HiJacked Browser. Since the 'new and improved' helpfile format requires Internet Explorer to run... Google for Browser Hijack there are a number of freeware applications out there to help.
19.Re: Data file too large for floppy, how can I get it off this ancient PC?
Posted by aderoy on 6/27/2005 12:45:01 PM
Other Options:

1) use pkzip to zip the down. There are commandline options to span diskettes.
pkzip &ex a:asksam c:\asksam\data\Filename.ask
(from memory so doublecheck)

2) LapLink cables
2a) direct network connection (builtin Dos 6? interchange software)

I have been able to use all of the above to move files from machine a to b with little problems. The pkzip method is most likely the easiest to use ...
20.Pick Lists in Entry Forms
Posted by aderoy on 1/28/2005 7:33:54 AM
Has the problem of auto displaying a picklist been addressed?

ie: Picklist is auto popup in one entry form, but inactive in another. Thus far it is not possible to have this. It is binary either on or off for ALL entry forms. Would be nice if it can be set by each form.
21.Re: Bullets in report appear as Y with two dots
Posted by aderoy on 1/28/2005 7:01:00 AM
This is a common problem. The fonts used in reporting do not use the 'wingding' font that just happens to display the 'bullet'. When a report field is set there can only be one font for the whole field. (Do not try to say that fast four times!). Guess which does not transfer?

This is one sore spot in my use of askSam and reporting. It is very disappointing that this has not been addressed in version 6. Has been a problem with askSam since the first Windows vesion.
22.Re: Corruption, corruption, corruption
Posted by aderoy on 1/28/2005 6:56:17 AM
I have files that are much greater in both size and number of documents, one 'small' file is over 1.2Gig and 29K documents, 7 entry forms plus 62 reports. Do not think it is the base application itself. In use version 5.x, Win2K & WinXP (have both personal and pro versions).

How long has this been ongoing? Long term or is this recent?
-- recent, can the drive be failing? or have a bad spot, newer HD's will try to auto correct (move the 'bad' sector to another ...
23.Attaching documents to file
Posted by aderoy on 1/19/2005 11:56:32 AM
Using askSam version 5.1.2.641 on Win2K platform.

I can attach a single file to a document if there are spaces. If I try to attach a group of files either by holding down the Control Key or Shift, there is an error 'file not found' if one file has any embedded spaces. If this happens note the filename close the dialog and attach the file one at a time.
