| 1. | Re: Is askSam similar to Memory Mate Posted by phil on 5/12/2004 4:33:33 PM Hi Ozstar,
Guess only an old guy like me remembers Memory Mate (I'm not sure if our tech guys were even born when it was around).
... although the products function differently, the concept of storing and retrieving unstructured data is the same. askSam lets you enter notes, ideas, etc into an empty screen and retrieve the information using a word or string.
Best,

| 2. | Re: Opening a specific document on loading askSam Posted by phil on 1/15/2004 10:59:22 AM Ian,
I've added it to the list. In the mean time... the best solution may be to have a link in the first document of your file to the document you want to open. |
| 3. | Quickest way to create Web apps Posted by phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:34 PM Just wondering what different people have found to be the quickest way to create Web applications.
Most of the applications we create are pretty simple: a screen for adding data, a screen for editing data, a search screen, and search results.
We use Active Server pages that we create using a text editor. It's not hard, but there must be a better way... a more drag and drop approach to creating these things.
I think Visual Dev with .NET will ... |
| 4. | editing the viewer Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:40 PM Mary,
You do not have to manually insert this into each document. You can automatically insert the contents of an Entry Form using DOCUMENT - INSERT ENTRY FORM and then setting the DOCUMENT SELECTION dropdown to "selected documents" or "all documents".
In your case:
1. Create a new Entry Form that contains the Hypertext Links you wish to insert.
2. Choose DOCUMENT - INSERT ENTRY FORM and have the Entry Form ... |
| 5. | editing the viewer Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:40 PM There's no way to automatically edit the links. The way it works: askSam first looks in the exact drive/directory specified in the link. If the file cannot be found, askSam then looks in the "current" directory (the directory of the current file). So if you copy onto CD and place all files in the same directory, the links will work.
Linking to Attachments will only link to attachments in the current document (you cannot link from one document to attachments in another ... |
| 6. | editing the viewer Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:40 PM Hi Mary,
The links to an ASK file would only work if the computer upon which the link was executed has the .ASK extension associated with askSam.
I don't know of any problems with linking to an attachment. But - the attachment must be in the document where you are defining the link.
If you'd like... send me a small copy of your file pschnyder@askSam.com - and I'll take a look. |
| 7. | Re: The Ultimate "Bug Report" Posted by phil on 1/8/2004 7:20:08 PM Jim - this is really odd. Question... if you just start askSam, and don't do anything else, does it kick you out? Or is it only when you click on hypertext links (or do something else)? |
| 8. | Links in Reports Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:20 PM Brendan, no trick... just something the report writer does not do. The report writer outputs information using the format you define in the report, not the formatting that is contained in the document. In many cases, this is much better... but in others it would be advantageous to save the formatting from the original doc. In a future version, I'd like to include an option that would allow you to set whether or not the output field would retain original formats. |
| 9. | Re: Start Dialog Display Posted by phil on 1/16/2004 7:58:43 PM what about if we truncate the path information. That way no matter how long the path we can make it fit. For example:
C:\askSam\database.ask
...5\data\instructions.ask
c:\my documents\phil.ask
...ts\research project.ask
It's wider than this... so more characters would display. Would this work? |
| 10. | Re: Importing from Eudora Posted by phil on 1/16/2004 7:53:06 PM Phil,
I'm curious as to why this is happening... it may be that the date on the emails that you are moving is older than the date of the last import... so it does not get imported. Or it could be that the date format in these messages is odd, and askSam is not reading it correctly.
If possible could you send me a small sample mailbox that would illustrate the problem (to my personal email - phil@asksam.com). I'd really like to see what's happening here.

| 11. | Re: Printing - partially solved Posted by phil on 1/29/2004 2:46:37 PM Rick,
This is really odd behavior... and because it only occurs in draft, it sounds like a quirk in the printer driver (Word does not use the standard Windows printer routines). A couple things to check:
1. In askSam under FILE - PAGE SETUP check that the TOP, BOTTOM, and RIGHT, LEFT marings are set to a reasonable number before printing in draft mode.
2. Try printing in WordPad (not NOTEPAD which has no formatting, but WordPad). It would be ... |
| 12. | Re: Import DB4 database in askSam entryform Posted by phil on 1/16/2004 9:16:12 AM Maarten -
I think you'll need to do this in a multi-step process:
1. Import the DB4 data into an askSam database.
2. Create a report that outputs all the DB4 data with : between each field and a CR/LF separating the documents.
3. Then import into askSam as CSV. Choose to import the one and only field into the appropriate field in your Entry Form.
Another option would be to use TextPipe to turn the ... |
| 13. | Search Results List: No content in first column Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:25 PM Hi Flo,
This appears to be particular to the German version (it works in the English). Might be size of a string or some other error in the translation kit. We'll need to take a look when we do the next German build.

| 14. | Re: Pick List Wrapping to Next Line Posted by phil on 1/9/2004 4:51:13 PM What about using the DOCUMENT - INSERT ENTRY FORM command... to insert an Entry Form that is just a closing bracket "]" and have that inserted in the appropriate line of your form.
Really easy to do... but from your description, I can tell if this is exactly what you need.

| 15. | missing toolbar Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:41 PM Hi Ludger,
When a report is on the screen, try RIGHT CLICKING in the TOOL BAR and make sure the REPORT OUTPUT option is checked. That should do display the menu... and the setting will be remembered. |
| 16. | Indexing a viewer file Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:41 PM Ludger, should work on any file > 10 MB that is not read only (for example will not index a file on a CD ROM). |
| 17. | User story - Loyola Marymount University uses asksam For Research Advancement Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:29 PM Anant, I think it would have been better to put "discuss in our forums" link at the top as well as the bottom of the user story.
BTW - this is a great users story. Love what she's doing with askSam. |
| 18. | Attachments Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:29 PM There's no way to list the names of attachments associated with a document in a report.
There is a search function that will find documents with (or without) attachments, but that's it. |
| 19. | Suggestions for New templates? Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:29 PM Anyone have any suggestions for new templates you'd like to see for askSam? |
| 20. | Suggestions for New templates? Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:29 PM We've never had a template for recipes, but it would be easy enough to do.
We did at one time have an example file with recipes from an Internet ListServe. I think we had a tutorial that had these imported into an askSam database (but it just used Subject: as a field).
In a "real" recipe template that would be fields for stuff like ingredients, catergory (Main Course, Appetizer, Dessert, etc). |
| 21. | Suggestions for New templates? Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:29 PM I'm having a bit of trouble visualizing how this would work. Could you email a small sample askSam db ... something that would show me how you'd like this to work - phil@askSam.com |
| 22. | Suggestions for New templates? Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:29 PM Two existing templates: Bibliography and Clippings are similar to what you describe, but neither is an exact match (I don't think they have a location field).
If they are not close enough, let me know. We could put something else together. |
| 23. | Next Update? Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:27 PM We just released a maintenance release (announced in Dec Surf Report). We've not yet announced a date for the next release. We don't yet have a Beta version... so it will be awhile. When Betas are available, we will estimate a release date. |
| 24. | Thesaurus Capabilities Posted by Phil on 1/8/2004 2:06:27 PM The current Pick List feature may help with this (if I'm understanding what you want).
You can define Pick Lists that appear in a field. This Lists allow you to select multiple words and have them inserted into a field.
You can also have a term in a Pick List that would insert multiple words. For example, you could have a Pick List entry called "Legal Keywords" that would insert "Legal, Lawyer, Attorney, Justice, Court, Trial, Defendant, ... |
